lighting and top for a 29g....questions | |

I bought only the tank...no hood because I am going to buy a light fixture. The tank is made by Top Fin...the PetSmart brand. I am thinking about getting the Coralife fixture that holds one 65w bulb. Is that a good choice? I will only have 2.2 wpg, but the other alternative is just to get the 2 65w...which would be over 4 wpg. If I get that fixture...where could I get a glass top? Does anyone know of a website that might have one...a top that has the feeding door thing? Or do I really need the top? The only inhabitants right now are going to be neons. Later I want to add cories and harlies. Any suggestions? :%) |

These are glass tops that are hinged so you can open the front while leaving the light untouched. lighting is really up to you, it's a taller tank so if you want to grow demanding plants the 2x65w would be a better choice. |

As for lights...I am still unsure. I think I will get the 1 65w because of lack of funds. Maybe in the future I will get the 2x65. Will the 1 65w grow plants such as wisteria, rotala indica, bacopa, and ludwigia?? Those are really only the plants I want. |

I'm also having luck with my water sprite, nymphaea lillies, Amazon sword, tons of crypts, a banana plant, dwarf saggitaria, anacharis, java fern, and anubius. I have no CO2 (I use Flourish Excel---sparingly) and I use Kent's Freshwater plant every 5 days or so. Good luck!! I am going to ask about the 2 bulb fixture in the plant section because I am afraid it will be too much light...and I won't have CO2. Your plant list pretty much contains the ones I want to grow. I wanted to try more colorful plants..but can't seem to find a decent priced fixture that gives me about 3wpg. I looked into getting the 1x65w and then a single fluorescent tube fixture...but still a little much. I am not sure. I have a few days to decide. I would like to get a light asap, but I know if I think about it and get what I want I will be happier...and hopefully not spend too much money. |

I'm not trying to set up an Amano tank or anything. Just trying to have something nice to look at that the fish will enjoy. I don't plan on running CO2 either so I think that's plenty of watts for me. You should be able to grow everything I just listed with a 1 x 65w fixture atop a 29....geez that's way more wpg than I'm running. I think you will be fine with that....especially with no CO2. Good luck with your lights. Last edited by crazyred at 10-Jan-2006 08:58 "Beauty is in the eye of the beer holder." |
