For plastic trim you'll need a particular type of spray paint. Regular paint has a difficult time bonding to plastic.

There's probably different brands. I know that Krylon makes a product called "Fusion" for painting plastic.

yes the paint will work for both but make sure you dont have any shiny ,smooth surface on anything you paint steel wool works good preparing the light. you mentioned concern that the light gets hot i dont think that the plastic on it gets hot enough to cause the paint to peel back off you should been ok with out the high temp. paint.

Why not tape the tank up and cover the top opening up with tape and paper, and just use ordinary spray paint. I can’t think of why this would be bad as long as you ran the tape on the top inside trim in a way to keep you from painting inside to groove where the hood sits.???

just use ordinary spray paint

Ordinary spray paint does not work well with plastic. That's why I recommended he get Krylon Fusion which is a spray paint exactly intended for use on plastic. Fusion doesn't require any priming or sanding of the plastic, just a clean surface.

Sorry Andy my question was more directed to what Tim said. "Any non toxic non aerosol paint should be ok"

Is doing what I suggested ok?

Yeah, sounds fine with me. Tape it off, cover everything in a 5 ft radius that he doesn't want paint on, and spray it on. He should watch out for overspray (which is why it's good to cover anything he doesn't want painted), and probably wear a mask. Doing it outside would be a good idea also, if it's possible.
