I was told that the skimmer could be used in FW tank. |

You'll see it be more effective in a harder water tank, such as some types of african cichlid setup. Accumulated protiens aren't really of concern in a freshwater tank unless you feed hellacious amounts of food, and your tank would have much different and more alarming concerns over protien. Most likely it's just wasting space in your tank. |

Skimmers technically do work in freshwater fish tanks, but won't be nearly as effective as in saltwater. Skimmers will work a bit better when used on tanks with very hard water, but still not as efficiently as in a salty tank. |
