Go with a canister as the water flows thru the media before hitting the impeller, therefore little to no chance of sand issues....I'll be getting one of [link=these]http://www.bigalsonline.com/catalog/product.xml?product_id=24927;category_id=2965;pcid1=2885;pcid2=" style="COLOR: #EB4288[/link] next time I burn out an impeller on my sand tank. Sand needs to be well washed to remove the small particles, have the intake rased and covered and still treated with uberrespect to not get it clogging you filter and yet I still love it go figure!

I would reccomend a eheim if you want to get the best but if you want to save money get an AC 500. they're about 30$ online. Putting a sponge filter on the intake helps to stop sand getting in the filter

the tank has been running since last summer- intake was raised 4 in from substrate- sand had been very well washed- I had even cut the intake tubed down 2 in before so it would be high enough above the sand.

I dont know what happened- just want to prevent it in the future.

Welcome to the club hca :#(. I've gone thru two impellers and am on my second filter...running a AC 500 on a 30 right now...but hope that it'll last a bit longer. Intakes raised and covered with nylon *crosses fingers*. Problem being that HOB filters werent designed to have added filtration put on before the impeller which is what we do by putting sponge or nylon over the intake, canisters are designed that way to begin with so there's not the added stress on the motor.

divertran, so does mine ...online prices are ever so much better
