Tank is too cold, adding hot water. To hot a tank, adding freezing water...baseball flying at itoops kids running through housedog chasing cat through house...any number of things could have shattered the tank, it depends on exactly what you saw/witnessed...hml

It would take a huge temperature difference to shatter a tank. Most tanks are made out of tempered glass.

Do you suspect anything strange with your tank cntryboi ?.
Tanks don't usually shatter on their own.

it wasn't my tank thankfully but nobody was home but i did notice an air vent nearby that could have been blowing cold air on the glass i suspect that this may have been a cause

Can't imagine that the air from the vent would cause a tank to shatter without something else going on.

A possibility would be a small crack or chip in the tank that had gone unnoticed and then either cold hitting it causing it to contract rather quickly, or again if it was hot air it could cause it to expand and then causing it too shatter.

A more likely scenario was someone or something striking the tank.

My dad bred fish many, many years ago (I BARELY remember - I do remember being terrified of a type of goldfish he kept - Black Moore?). He had dozens of tanks built into shelving on a wall in the basement. It is a well known story in our family (and confirmed by dad), that one day almost all of these tanks exploded for no apparent reason. It was a major disaster with literally hundreds of gallons of water and thousands of fish flopping among the shattered glass. We always speculated about some possible barometetric changes or some ultrasonic reason? He pretty much gave up the fish breeding business after that - though he always kept a tank or two for personal enjoyment.
