how do you work out what size sump you need for a certain tank size?

There isn't a certain size, so to speak. Most people find a sump that fits under the main tank in the stand. For instance, I have a 29 gallon main tank and a 10 gallon sump (which fits underneath in the stand). You can make your sump as big as you want, it's just a room issue

fallout a 30 gal is a 3 ft tank right, yeah i have room for that , i was also looking at using a 2ft tank as a prefilter and using a fluid bed filter for biological filtration. i am googling for diy sumps atm for media but do you have any ideas.
