this is a technical question. i have a 46 gallon bow front tank and, though its not exactly a common tank, ive noticed that some people do have them. im wondering if anyone has figured out the exact surface area of one yet. not big deal really, it would just save me the trouble of breaking out the ole' calculator

It doesn't matter. If you want to calculate the number of fish you can keep in that tank you're going overboard and doing unnecessary calculations.

I could tell you a pretty close estimate of the surface area if I broke out some calculus skillz

Waste of time though

i stand corrected then. i can see my desire for technical information is pointless

measure L x W like you would any normal tank.

then, get the distance of the bow out from where the imaginary flat front would be and multiply that by the length of the tank. divide that by two and add it to the top number you'll *roughly* have you area.

but, like the others say, i wouldn't worry about getting an exact number. if you're still in a fiz over it, check the manufacturer's website and see if they happen to have the area.

lets do a bit of geometry......
take then tank and imagine it as a rectangle and a sigment of a circle.
now it's quite easily seen that you can find out the SA of the rectangle by multiplying the length by the width
now imagine the sigment of the circle is within another rectangle. find the SA of that rectangle and multiply by 2/3.
add those number together should give you a roughly answer

So for your 46 gallon tank (and mine) you have a 36" long tank and the side is 12" so 36*12=432"

The Bow is a segment of a circle 36" long and 4" wide so 36*4=144 144 * 2/3 (or .66)=95.04". Therefore, total surface area is approximately 432+95.04=527.04 square inches.

thanks a lot everybody

i think that carried on more than i had planned, but i appreciate the effort. i know that "fish per inch/ fish per gallon" stuff is at best a rough guide, but i was just curious. thanks again!

I was going to try some math crunch on my diamond shaped 90 gal corner tank but then thought, NAH !
