ive been reading forums for a while now, and every now and then i hear about a leaky tank. is this something i should be concerned about. my 75g is on a home-made stand made out of a bathroom vanity. that i extended a bit but reinforced every single joint.

It's not THAT common of a problem. None of my tanks have ever sprung a leak or have I had a stand have a problem. Basically, if you think your stand MIGHT not be strong enough, reinforce it more. Better safe than sorry...

PM/email/msg me if you have any questions/comments regarding me or my knowledge or if you want me to read a thread.
