id say a 20gallon, those 2 filters are 225 GPH together and that would clean a 20 gallon 11.25 times. which is about just right.

I was hoping they'd be good enough for a 33g, b/c I could get a cheap one (with canopy) and wouldn't have to buy a filter or heater, since I have a 100w & 200w marineland.

you don't need to turn over the tnak 11.25 times every hour. all you need is around 7 or 8 times per hour.
so a 33G would be good. definately enough filteration

well 7-8 is minimum, 10 is recommended, 15 or over is too much.

what fish have you got in the tank? if its not overstocked and they are small community fish like tetras that would be enough filteration IMO.

I agree. With small, community type fish I don't think 10x per hour would be necessary. Larger, messier fish like oscars and such definitely need 10-12x per hour. I would slightly understock the 33 and it should be ok. Make sure to stay on top of your water changes though.

I would stick with my answer of 35 or so. That is the LARGEST tank you can keep with them. Having the tank filtered 5 times every hour is enough if you keep up with your water changes and if your careful feeding. The amount of fish you keep in there depends on how clean you can keep the tank (clean as in water quality). Buy that 33 gallon you wanted, it'll be fine!

EDIT: I keep a 10 gallon with 5 panda cories, 3 ottos, and a betta. I only have a fluval 1 power filter that does 50 gph (5 times over) and my water quality is perfect (to some degree). I do do 10 percent water changes daily, but even if i did less my fish would still be great. Once again, it's up to you how willing you are to do the water changes, or anything to maintain good water quality. Also, using live plants will help remove ammonia etc.

What filters work for what tanks...it's a case by case basis. Try it and if it doesn't work change it.

Okay, maybe I'll give it a try then and see how it works. I was thinking of a 33g shell dweller tank.
