I know angelfish are notorious for snacking on neon tetras, but has anyone kept them together without incident?

The answer would be yes if the Angels were small and the Neons large.

In other words as soon as the Angels get large Neons are a pre dinner snack for them.

Have a look in [link=My Profile] http://www.fishprofiles.com/forums/member.aspx?id=1935[/link] for my tank info

I have, The neons were full size and the 2 angelfish were meduim size. I never got to find out for sure if the neons would become lunch because i stripped that tank down and started with different fish.

the highly individual nature of cichlid personality makes this a tricky one - i have kept well-fed big adult angels with schools of neons and have never lost the neons. on the other hand i've had pairs kill and eat cardinals, neons, and small rummies. so go figure...try it out.

Try to get some small Angels & the Neons wouldn't be eaten, but if you get fully grown Angels, the Neons will become snack.

I have heard that if the neons go in the tank first (and get bigger) that the small angels won't see them as food. I know they are natural prey in the wild, but putting them in there first would probably make the angels see the neons as tankmates and not dinner.

Hi there,
well two experiences for me with Angels and neons.
The first was with my large pair, Sneaky Pete and Sid Vicious. They made quick work of the group of 12 neons.

Now, second experience, Rosy, the daughter of Pete and Sid,
has been with Neons since she was just a small fry - about 1 inch in size herself. She is now almost as large as mom and dad at about 5 inches, and 1 year old this Feb 12th.
She picks off the occassional really skinny old or dying white cloud, but seems to have no interest in midwater fish of any kind, including the neons.

I would say, the smaller the angel, when introduced to the neons, the better.
Add Large hungry adults + neons, well that would be a snack bar.
