This is crude at best, but, a male will generally be bigger with a larger dorsal fin (unless you have the longfin variety, then that method doesn't work) and the females will generally be fatter. Males also often have deeper colours. But this isn't a sure fire way to tell, since there are so many shades of red out there. Sorry.

I think you'll find that alot of the serpaes at the lfs are young and not fully developed so it will be difficult to select a pair.

About half way down under Morphology is a black and white photo. I couldnt find much more to help you. Perhaps doing a search on the internet will give you some more information.
