You should be fine unless you have a particularly aggressive betta. However, make sure you don't mix a betta with very SMALL neons... they may wind up as snacks. Larger neons should fare well.

I've heard that the aggression can go the other way, and that Neons have been known to nibble the flowing fins almost completely off male Bettas. (I can vouch for the fact that female Bettas can get along with fine with Cardinals, though. Female Bettas seem to do far better than males in a community tank in general.)

One other thing: Bettas prefer water a bit warmer than your average tropical (ideally, 80 deg F or 27 C), while Neons (unlike Cardinals) are supposed to prefer water a bit cooler than the average (72 F, or 22 C). Their tolerated temperature zones do overlap, but perhaps this difference should be considered.

Good advice on temperature, especially if your betta gets sick and you have to up the temps.

Its a who lives or dies choice, and a mistake I made when I started out. Never again.

Often temperature compatability is more of an issue than ph or kh compatability.

I also think that you can mix them & put the temperature in between, maybe 24C.

I have Cardinal Tetras with my M Betta but I believe some Species/varierties of M Betta can be rather aggressive particually the Reds (well that I was told here on FP)
My tank temp is 25C.

Have a look in [link=My Profile]http://

I have almost always had neons and bettas and yes together. They do fine unless you have a very agressive betta, in that case he needs to be alone anyway. Go for it. They are fun to watch together too. I ahve a very sweet betta in the office where I work and he did jsut fine with the neons I had in there with him. I moved the neons because I got a bigger tank at home and there werre only 2 neons left from a mean tiger barb I had a while back. I am probabyl goign to set up a 10 gallon tnak with neons and a betta for my bf's son eventually. Unles I decide to do a tank full of male guppies.

Bettas are one of the most common fish kept in unheated tanks. Despite the fact they can survive higher temps very few are kept warmer than your normal tropical and often they are kept in cold water. I don't think temperature is that big of a deal anyway. The only fish I've had trouble with was putting otos in an 80F tank. Unless I'm keeping a sensitive species that likes extreme temperatures or for some reason have to set a tank much higher than I normally do I don't even pay attention to what temp online profiles quote for a fish. All my tanks are just set at 76-78F except the spawning tank for my sparkling gouramis and the tank at my mom's house because the sun will heat that room up to 82F from 75F so it's safer to keep the tank temp high than let it fluctuate 5 or more degrees.

I have 6 neons, a male betta, and 2 ottos in a 10g, planted tank. The temp stays at 80 degrees F. Has been for a few months now and everything is fine. I have lost a couple neons, don't know if it was because of the betta though. I have never seen him act aggressively toward the neons. I have plenty of plants and the neons hide alot. I will be upping the number of neons to 10 soon. Everything is fine now though. Good luck! :%)

er I think the compatabilty list needs updating, I noticed a lot of cichlids on there that arent really community, and are either too territorial or have different kh and ph and decor preferences to be compatible with too many fish. I wouldnt take the list as gospel just yet.The dwarf puffer entry is particularly wrong as a lot of fish recommended for use with them would probably murder them.

Bettas and neons generally get on ok though. Not a perfect match, but it can be made to work.As long as the neons can get away from a betta in a belligerent mood, and the tank is big enough and well decorated enough they should be fine. The ph issues are negotiable to some degree.
