I have a new school of 10 cardinals, and I have noticed that their red bottom stripe fades to...."brown/gray" at night. The first night, I was worried, but in the morning, they were red again. It seems to happen every night, (I've only had them for about 6 night so far) but they are always viberant in the morning. Is this common? The fish all seem fine.

thanks,
-Dennis

This is very common among most fish, they are just sleeping, I think it is like a safety device they use so that in the wild they are not so easily spotted by preditors while they are sleeping. Don't worry, it's perfectly normal. As long as it comes back when they wake up.

Ok, thanks. It's pretty amazing how fast they can change back and forth!

It's not a very good defense though, as their bright blue stripe still shines great.

I guess they are lucking nobody is hunting them in my tank!

When I first got my cardinals, I thought they were going to die when I saw their lovely red stripe had gone. But wihtin 15-20mins it was back. They do it all the time. It's quite cool

Wow! cool. It's funny, I read every thing I could find about cardinals before I got them, and I never heard that mentioned.

If you can't trust the internet, what ca you trust?
