55 Gallon- Not Sure What's Happening... | |
KariLyn23 Hobbyist Posts: 78 Kudos: 32 Votes: 7 Registered: 02-Jan-2006 | My 55 gallon has been set up for several months. Completed the cycle one month ago, and planted three weeks ago. 9 Columbian Tetras and 2 Clown Loaches were added (in two phases), and have been in and doing well. Last weekend 5 Otos were added, after being in QT for a couple of weeks. Lost 1 Oto in 24 hours, no indication of why....color was good, no wounds, nothing obvious. I assumed it didn't transition well, and wasn't extremely concerned. Yesterday I noticed two Tetras looked to have Popeye, and moved them to QT for treatment. One has already passed. Today two more Tetras were dead (in the 55 gal), but with no signs of anything unusual. The remaining Tetras are not as active, and are hiding in the plants more than is usual. They are not showing a lot of interest at feeding time. I must note that they are around 6 years old, which I know may be a factor. My water parameters are: Ammonia: 0ppm, Nitrite: 0ppm, Nitrate: 10ppm. I do weekly water changes/cleaning (which happened yesterday). The only recent change (besides addition of Otos) is that I began using Flourish and Flourish Excel. I have dosed twice, once per week for the last two weeks, and dose them together after I do a water change. I also dose with Cycle after water changes. Any idea as to what's happening here? I use the Master Test Kit from API, but know that I need to be doing additional tests, since I am planted and dosing ferts. Which tests kits do I need to have? Thanks everyone, Kari |

As for the water test take a good sample to your LFS then compare the tests against yours just in case there is something wrong with your test kit. You have not mentioned filtration what type do you have and how often do you clan it also how do you clean it? There are some times totally unexplained sudden deaths (usually caused by the replaced water) this is extremly difficult to trace what it is. Some local water boards publish infomation about their water peramiters contact you local water board just in case there has been a problem. In the mean time add as much airation as posible this sometimes help. After you get all the water peramiters done get back to us with the results. Have a look in [link=My Profile] http://www.fishprofiles.com/forums/member.aspx?id=1935[/link] for my tank info Look here for my Betta 11Gal Desktop & Placidity 5ft Community Tank Photos Keith Near enough is not good enough, therefore good enough is not near enough, and only your best will do. Put the water in a bowl for 24 hours then test it and post them hear along with the tank prams. Do you have carbon of any type in your filter system, as this will remove alot of medications and inpurities from the water in the tank. Also what is the temp of your tank water and the water your adding? Live life to it's fullest |
