Hi

yesterday my bristlenose died. He was sitting out in the open in the morning. I noticed his mouth had blisters all around it and he had a sore above his left pectoral fins. He died about lunchtime while I was away at work. When I got home I did a 50% water change, put in some ammo lock, cycle and melafix.

In the morning the 1.5inch angelfish that I have in the tank were just hanging out near the filter intake. They seemed to have lost their appetite as well. Late tonight when I got home all of the angels and neon tetras are at the top of the water gasping for air.

I expect there will probably be dead fish in the morning. if there are any alive I'll get the parameter readings and put them up.

Maybe you have lack of oxygen in the tank. Do you have any airstones?.

no I dont have any airstones.

I just found I only have one testkit left - my nitrite kit.

Its reading 3ppm.

Time for another waterchange. I'll have to pester somone to get me to a petstore as well as mobility for me is a bit of an issue (bad eyesight).

Oh yeah, no deathhs yet and all but 2 of the fish are still at the top of the tank but they arent gasping for air.

Sorry to hear about your losses. It is probably for the best that you surrender your fish. It takes a good person to know when they can't adequately supply the proper environment for their pets.

Perhaps floating a tupperware container with ice water in it would be helpful in the meantime?

Depending where you are in Aust we have been having some very hot weather lately.

A air stone is good at all times but a must in those hot days.

There are some here that will swear by the rule never use ice as you will get Ich. I expermented with ice cubes in my 5ft tank last year on a very hot day and the temp only dropped just 1.5f if that. I can assure I would never put any of my fish especially larger and older ones in any danger.

A large ice block would take a long time to completly dissolve. You could do a good water change and keep the take out water and put it back when that cools down ( by adding ice). Doing it that way you would not be putting ice directly into your tank also a stress coat would help.

Have a look in [link=My Profile] http://www.fishprofiles.com/forums/member.aspx?id=1935[/link] for my tank info

A lot of chemical adjusters and cycling agents require oxgen as part of their reactive process. With fish that size , and in higher temperatures (oxygen is more readily available in cooler water)you will find good aeration and surface water disturbance absolutely essential. A good airstone or a decent venturi nozzle on a filter outlet will help solve your problems. Good gaseous exchange can also have knock -on effects with bacteria and detritus that affect water ph, so this might be worth checking too.
