I just noticed that my betta has a few scales on top of his head that have turned white and seem to be peeling up. Tankmates are black neons and kuhli loaches. This is a 10 gallon tank, temp = 78, ammonia = 0, nitrite = 0, nitrate = 20-40, pH = 8.2. I know those nitrates probably mean I'm due for a water change but it doesn't seem like anything incredibly dangerous. One of the black neons does have his tail missing but that was before I moved them to my betta's tank. I haven't observed any behavior out of the ordinary and the betta still comes to the front of the tank when I walk up to it and eats normally.

Is it possible he dug into the gravel or is this some sort of infection? I think all I have on hand is maracyn, maracide and some coppersafe but none of those seem like they'd work here.

EDIT: I went to take some pictures and my camera's batteries are dead so I'll try to get some up later.

I'd love to help, but if pictures are en route, i'll wait until I see them and be more specific.

You state that you are due for a water change. How often and what percentage do you change. In my betta tank I do a weekly water change of about 45%+. Is it possible he could have hurt his head on any thing?

Have a look in [link=My Profile] http://www.fishprofiles.com/forums/member.aspx?id=1935[/link] for my tank info

I try to do 20% every week but sometimes its a couple weeks before I get to it. This is a 10 gallon tank with a filter on it so I don't really need the big water change like that I don't think.

I have a powerful internal Eheim and I still do the weekly water changes as well as the filter cleaning.
