Hi

One of my friends has a betta and it appears to have fin rot from what she has described to me.

Its in a small bowl (i did protest against this) i havent seen it as yet however am visiting tonight.

Should melafix do the job mending the fins? its what ive always used in my tanks. I havent had much experience with these type of fish and dont know how sensitive they are.

Would appreciate your thoughts. Thanks

It depends on the type of finrot and what is causing it, but I'd give melafix a go. Make sure you dose very carefully.

Try and get the bowl somewhere warm as this cold weather won't be helping.

EDIT: how small is small?? Less than 2L?

Other than trying to do the best you can if possible take a test kit with you or get a sample and get that tested. This just might prove to your friend that what they are doing is totally wrong.

All the best I have the exact same problem mum knows best but has never kept a fish in her life and what the shop says is gospel.

Have a look in [link=My Profile] http://www.fishprofiles.com/forums/member.aspx?id=1935[/link] for my tank info

Thanks for your responses!

The tank is about 2L (maybe less) people seem to think its ok to keep fish in a tiny bowl, esp these as they always see them in stores kept in jars and people working at some LFS dont seem to mind handing out the advice that they can be kept in these bowls. There should be a law against selling bowls that are too small!

She has been changing 25% of the water weekly as i recommended. I dont have a test kit on me unfortunately but will try melafix and see if that helps the situation. She has told me that she is seeing the bits the have rotted off floating in the bowl.

Cally, im not sure whereabouts in Oz your from but in Sydney its been quite warm but i will check to see the temp of the room. i know that it does not get direct sunlight where it sits.

Will check it out tonight, though im guessing this may be somewhat of a common problem with these fish?
