Hello,

I have a tank with 7 clownloaches(small size) and other community fish such as corys tetras and rainbow fish in there and recently some of them(clown loaches) are acting strange and dieing (already 1 death) some seem to "float" near the top of the tank and have dull colours (looks like they r sick) and the others arnt moving much. The ones floating on the top seem to die in the next few days as past experiences tell me. My airation level is good and my tank has a pH of 6.6 no ammonia nitrate and nitrite. What could be the problem?? And also wen one died it didnt seem to have any fungus or anything on it and before it died it was floating near the top as well(slow moving and weird looking dull colours). Please help me to solve this problem! and also the other fish seem to be fine but they have gone abit quiet.

Thanks alot to all of you who help!

Yaay water perams, you go to the top of the class, well done.

How long since the first sign of illness till death occurred, and is there any redness around the gills, raised visible red veins, white flecks in the eyes, and flicking prior to death?

Is the belly bloated or swollen, are the barbels intact, was the faeces normal prior to death. Any fin tears or white edges? Did the belly swell radically after death?

Cause is probably bacteria or protozoa, but we'll need to try and nail down which one, clowns can be really sensitive with meds, and it pays to try and guess as accurately as possible, so we dont take undue risks with general treatments..If you want to take advantage of a quick diagnosis you might want to try protozin, it shouldnt harm the clowns and will cure most of the potential ailments it could be, but it will really help if you can provide the info ive asked for.

The no nitrate reading worries me a little though, especially with fish like clowns about you really should be getting a reading there, unless youve recently gone ballistic on water changes its very rare not to -the test kit might be off.

Thanks for your reply.
The last death was yesterday and the first sign of it was about 4-5 days ago. There is no redness around the gill area, the only major physical difference i can see is that the colour is whiteish and their eyes are abit clouded and also there are some white edges on the fins, the belly is fine and after death the belly was fine also. Well the reading of nitrates is under 0.25PPM i think its between 0 and 0.25ppm.
Thanks for you help
Should i do a large water change? or add some medication?

also ive reliased that 2 of the clown loaches just float near the surface and are not feeding while the others are. What kind of baterial infection is this and how do i solve this problem. One of them is upsidedown at the very surface of the water looking like it wont last too long. Thanks for your help I think they will be gone in 2 or so days if something isnt done about it.

Well the water quality sounds fine, so id stick with my original plan and go with protozin, if you can get it,its good stuff.

http://www.waterlife.co.uk/waterlife/protozin.htm

If you cant get that or an equivalent med quickly, get some melafix and pimafix to slow the infection down in the meantime, they tend to be widely available. Sounds like they might have velvet to me. As you said yourself you dont want to be hanging around with this one, your fish might not last long.

How long have they been in that tank and did you buy them at the same time from the same LFS and tank.

The reason it could be very possible they are all suffering from the same problem????.

Contact your LFS and see what they have to say.

I have no idea about suitable medicines and I will leave that to others.

Have a look in [link=My Profile] http://www.fishprofiles.com/forums/member.aspx?id=1935[/link] for my tank info

The other fish have been in my tank for ages most of them over 3 years but those clownloaches are relatively new maybe 2-3 weeks. I went to the LFS yesterday and the ones in the tank i purchased from seem to be fine...

It seems very strange did you mention to the LFS that yours had died? Was that batch you saw the same delivery or a fresh lot. I am still thinking that the one you purchased were not very healthy.
If I am wrong think about these questions.
I assume that you got them home quickly and did not have them in a hot car or in the sunlight, and you introduced them into the tank correctly.
Finally did you feed them as soon or very shortly after you introduced them into the tank?

Have a look in [link=My Profile] http://www.fishprofiles.com/forums/member.aspx?id=1935[/link] for my tank info

I introduced them into my tank properly but didnt feed them until about 6-7 hours later during feeding time. 3 more have died since my last post and I have noticed one thing, before they died their fins and tails look like they been bitten off, like they got no flesh on the fins just the spiky bone bits if u know what i mean... is that part of the diesease or some fish attacked it? What causes this problem i am very sad that they've died.. I still dose the furan 2. what should i do now only 3 left from 8 b4

It could be fin rot, or it could be nipping, or both. Whats the stocking list for that tank?
