For a week and a half now, I've been keeping a pair of convicts.
Only yesterday I found out that both of them have some sort of mist in their eyes.

Can anyone tell me what this is and how to get rid of it?
In 20 years of keeping barbs, I've never seen this before.

You try something else once ...

In my experience, the foggy lens is caused by a bacterial infection after handling with a net. It is often exacerbated by nitrates in the water. Before medicating the fish in a hospital tank, test your nitrates and perform a large (50%) water change in nitrates are 20 ppm or above.

I strongly suspect that misting of the eye is caused by bacteria that often lead to the onset of immune system suppression, and often ends up with the infestation of hexamita protozoa in cichlids. Get it treated asap with something like melafix , and hopefully hexamita will not rear its ugly head. It might be worth checking water quality too, cichlids often require higher standards of cleanliness than a lot of barbs.
