Hi, I bought a Gibby today. It has fin-rot, didn't notice till I got home. It's in my Rio 180 on it's own. I want to move it to my 28 ltr tank, and the fish in the 28ltr to the 180ltr. Would the Gibby have infected the water?

It could depend on what caused the fin rot. I would take the Gibby back straight away. As far as treating the tank to be honest I have no idea and I dont think I would trust the LFS where you bought it from either, they could easly sell you a lot of meds and they are not required.
Sorry that is the best I can do to help you.

Have a look in [link=My Profile] http://www.fishprofiles.com/forums/member.aspx?id=1935[/link] for my tank info

So you have no idea how to treat the tank when he's moved to make it safe for other fish?

Im sorry you are having problems with Fin rot. I have found this page about the problem. [link]

http://www.fishprofiles.com/files/profiles/d100014.htm[/link]

This page suggests malachite green. Remeber not to have any carbon in the filtration system. I would suggest if you have some, Prima or Melafix to decrease stress and prevent any fungal infections as the fish is suseptable to this right now. HTH

Thanks for your input as always, Shane

Pimafix is the more effective med against fungal infections, melafix is more the bacterial end, but since finrot can be either fungal or bacterial in nature I would use a combination of both. Tetra also do fungi stop, and other meds like protozin perform really well. Myaxazin will do the bacterial end too, and seachem, and loads of other companies do formulas based on malachite green and methylene blue that will do the job. Finrot meds are usually the most commonly available around , although you may have to try more than one unless you can source a med that kills both causes.

Go to the shop and see what they stock. And the short answer is yes, while finrot contageon is common (almost omnipresent) in a lot of tanks, available to infect a weakened and stressed fish at any time, the gibby could have introduced a strain that other fish may be more vulnerable to on average and a small treatment to make sure it doesnt survive is probably a good idea, but try not to choose meds that will adversely affect filter bacteria.
