I've had a betta for about 2 months in a 10 gallon tank with a few pygmy corys, plants, and whatnot. Two days ago, he developed a grey splotch on the side of his head. I haven't seen anything like it before, so here I am.

First thing is first. Parameters are as follows:

NH3 -- 0 ppm
NO2 -- 0 ppm
NO3 -- 15 ppm
PO4 -- 0.5 ppm
pH -- 7.5
GH -- 12 dH
KH -- 10 dH

He doesn't appear to have any other external symptoms -- he's eating fine, not lethargic, normal breathing, feces, and everything.

Here are some pics:

I know it looks like he has a bit of bloat in his belly, but he's always been like that. I gave him a shelled pea when I first got him to see if he was plugged up, but it didn't do anything. I stopped worrying about it.

Any ideas?

You know whats weird, i have a opaline gourami who has beautiful dark markings, and is perfectly fine, in a nice environment, but he has a clean patch of scales on his head, that looks like he shed a scale!

I have heard of blackscale, where there becomes blackened scales due to only feeding one type of worm, usually bloodworm. I am sure it isnt harmful, unless it is anything else other than blackscale, but in this case, it is white scale!

I also think it is due to age maybe, as a betta loses color when it gets old, i think....

Im curious too! I hope it isnt harmful!

Thanks for the reply, Goby.

Hmm. I'd never heard of blackscale.

He does get frozen bloodworms and daphnia as treats, but his normal diet is a good flake food.

No change in him. He's still swimming around fine, as happy as a clam.

Weird.

Bump.

Still no change. It doesn't seem to be affecting him at all. It's looking like it is harmless.
