Hi

I have a Black Widow with a black growth on this mouth. It is about the size of his mouth. He's had it for awhile and doesn't seem to bother him. He eats quiet well and is still very active. No other black widows have it. Ammonia 0.25 (has been for awhile - see post on water quality) Nitrite 0.

Any idea what it is and whether I should I try to treat it?

Thank you!

Hi fishymama, this is going to sound crazy, but can you describe the black growth a little better?

Is it mole like? fuzzy/cottonball like? Hairy?

Better yet, if you could post a picture, maybe then someone can actually say, "Hey I had that problem, and this is what helped..."

Thanks, heidi

I certainly agree with Heidi more infomation also a photo would help. Also you could take the fish to a good LFS and try to get some help.

Unfortunately I can't post a picture. The growth is black and looks hard. Definitely not hairy or fuzzy. It looks like the fish has fat lip like he's been punched! It seemed like it almost appeared overnight awhile ago. It's not getting any bigger and doesn't seem to effect him. I'm tempted to leave it alone but just wondered if anyone had come across anything similar.

Hope that helps a little.

Thanks

or you could email me the picture as well...

Sounds like maybe he had a run in with a bit of decoration or gravel, or something...and has a busted lip of sorts?

Is there anything he could have brushed, or busted up against?

fishymama

All I can think of is a growth/scar tissue from an injury, fight, or hitting a sharp object such as a rock. I would keep a good eye on it and as long as he is eating and not giving problems I would not worry too much.

Please remember this is just an opinion. I suggest taking it to a good LFS to get a better opinion as they would be able to see the growth.

Sorry this is the best I can do, some one else might be able to assist you more.

Hi Keith

Sorry for not replying - for some reason I didn't think the picture had appeared. :%) Thanks so much for posting it.

If it doesn't seem like a common disease and he's not passing it on to the rest of the tank I'll leave him be for now. He certainly seems happy enough.

Thanks again /:'
