What are your nitrite, nitrate and ammonia levels?

The only time I ever have problems with my guppies getting "sucked into" the filter was when ammonia levels spiked. All wound up dying.

What do the dead fishes' bodies look like? Any extensive redness? Any white spots?

I'm so sorry for your loss.

I know it aches, and your heart it breaks

All your water peramiters will certainly help, also more info about your tank. If they were weak they would not be able to swim away from your intake.

Also more info about your filter just in case it is too strong or not set up correctly.

Have a look in [link=My Profile] http://www.fishprofiles.com/forums/member.aspx?id=1935[/link] for my tank info
