I just bought a few cichlids the other day and they have seemed to b fine. the other day i came home home and found one dead... figured nothing of it... just noticed its gills were red... kinda like they were bleeding or rashed... and it was the only one. Now almost all of my fish have this... What is it and what can i do besides a water change?

Red gills indicate dangerous levels of ammonia. Your test kit may be out of date.

I would do a 50% water change then add a product that neutralizes ammonia and nitrites. Before the water change, reserve a water sample that you can take to your LFS for testing.

You probably have an ammonia spike because of the number of fish that you added to the tank.

Try adding some amoo chips to the filter. Instead of a 50% water change, I'd do a 20% every other day for 8 days. This changes other levels more gradualyy than a fifty percent change would.

Also, that many Jacks and Jewels may get to big for your tank. You definately want to make sure you keep up with your water changes every other week.

Red gills can also be symptoms of gill flukes and various protozoan infections. Both are aggressive and will need meds, but ammonia can certainly burn and inflame gills too.
