fishsage Hobbyist Tank You Daddy. Posts: 103 Kudos: 53 Votes: 16 Registered: 08-Dec-2007 | Edited by fishsageHi all, Well, we picked up a Bosemani Rainbowfish from WalMart of all places! Anyhoo, we've had her for about 48hrs, and noticed a white fungus type growth on her upper lip, So, here's what I did, and my rational.... let me know what else I need to do, and if my reasoning is correct! I set up our 10 Gallon with proper temp water (Dechlorinated with Stress-Coat), no gravel, Got a big airstone bubbling away, put in the heater, put a very low wattage incandescent in the hood, and added Pimafix, and Stress-zyme to the water. Once I double checked temp etc.... I added the fish to the tank. I don't have a cartridge for the aqueon filter that doesn't have carbon..... I may be able to get one tonight, but my thinking is that for the short term, she should be OK without a filter because of the airstone, and because she is the only fish in the tank. My thinking is that if I keep up with 20% WC every other day I can do this without a filter. Am I nuts? I can't honestly believe that just 2 weeks ago I had only a 55 gallon tank, and now I have a 20 gallon QT and a 10 gallon hospital tank! At least I feel somewhat prepared for the hobby now. Thanks! I feel uncomfortable not having a filter in a hospital tank but I guess short term it would be okay. Welcome to the fish addiction. Before you criticize someone walk a mile in their shoes. If you have to use furan 2 or real antibiotics in qt should the disease turn out to be flexibacter, then youll be glad you never bothered trying to cycle it, and youd probably have to buy ammolock anyway. Sick fish should not have to face the rigours of cycling because they would be unlikely to survive in a weakened condition anyway. A cycled and filtered qt is fair enough if your wanting a month or two of observation, but if youve aquired a sick fish from the start, and symptoms show quickly, you might as well go straight for a filterless treatment tank approach rather than a general qt approach. Rainbows take higher phs with grace , so conditioned and ammolocked tapwater with o2 should be fine for now, the maturity and lower ph of a more mature aquarium isnt needed yet. Personally id just go with treatment tank protocols for now, cos I have a feeling it might need to go to antibiotics and furans rather than just the usual organic dyes and salts, and the filter would be immediately uncycled anyway, plus youd need to strip it and sterilise it. Progression of fluff that fast usually iss flexibacter. Once its cured, then you can cease using ammolock and start worrying about cycling the qt post treatment or put the fish into community that will presumably already be cycled. |

I am approaching my first anniversary of entering this addictive hobby. I started with a 20g, got a 10g at Christmastime, am in the process of cycling a 55g now, and will look to establish another 10g (probably in my son's room) over the summer... I'm so tempted it's not even funny. The Amazon Nut... |
