How often do you have Ich and why? | |
LITTLE_FISH ***** Little Fish ***** Master of Something Posts: 7303 Kudos: 1997 Votes: 670 Registered: 20-May-2005 | Ok, I am currently fighting a bout of Ich in my tank . Reading so many entries here at FP regarding Ich I began to wonder how common this problem actually is. So here are my questions: 1) How often do you have Ich in your tank? 2) Why do you think you got it? 3) How do you treat it? This would also include an outbreak in a quarantine tank. My answers: 1) I have Ich for the second time in 4 months. 2) I got it most likely from introducing new fish (looked healthy to me in the LFS), in my case both times after adding 6 Neon Tetras to the tank. 3) I treat it with Quick Cure on a quarter dosage (1/2 for Tetras and 1/2 for plants) every other day, with 20% water changes on the days between treatment, for 2 weeks (even if I don’t see any signs of Ich anymore before that time is up). What is your experience? Thanks, Ingo |

When a tank does have ich I treat with raised temps, Quick Cure or Rid Ich +, and salt (if safe for the tank occupants). I have 2 very, very nervous male keyholes. Anything gets these two darting around the tank, off-color, looking for a hiding place...even water changes or a different face looking at the tank And the white spots appear Whether it's truly ich or not doesn't matter, it definitely looks like ich but I've learned to ignore it and a few hours later they're back to normal ~~~~~~~~~~~~ There is water at the bottom of the ocean |

Cured with raised water temps and a whitespot treatment. Now run a uv sterilizer all the time, and as backup i can run a vortex diatom filter which is supposedly capable of macerating the protozoa.(even if it doesn't the tank looks great after a run in with that filter.) It came in on a new neon. 3) How do you treat it? I used Rid-Ich. I've also helped countless others (in dorms) treat their fish for ich with Rid-Ich. It's cheap, readily available, and works just fine IME. |

But only my cardinal gets the white spot tho. But after I treat them with quickqure they be fine. How ever I also have another 35g with severum that I never have white spot for like 3-4 years now. But last week when I added a rock white spot out break baby. I guess it must be the rock that carry the white spot. |

It must have come in with my new rummynose tetras, which were quarentined for 2 weeks, and looked fine. I'm treating it with Rid-Ick. Everybody says to raise the temp, but it never seems to be mentioned to what temp it should be raised. My tank was at 78f, I raised to 80f, I didn't want to go any higher without knowing for sure. I hope that is a good temp. Was that all the questions?....I hope so.. -Dennis |

Where does it come from either from fish, plants, and I know the water during the colder months. Stopping it, be extremly careful when buying anything. Only buy from trusted sources. Prepared all water one week in advance. Keith Near enough is not good enough, therefore good enough is not near enough, and only your best will do. I VOTE DO YOU if not WHY NOT? VOTE NOW VOTE NOW |

littlemousling Conchiform Posts: 5230 Registered: 23-Aug-2003 | Hmmm .... oh! Two years ago, when the heater in my 44 died. Only the stappersi got it, which was actually unfortunate since their natural patterning seems contrived to hide the "evidence." I bought a new (better) heater, kept the temperature up a bit, and everyone was fine. -Molly Visit shelldwellers.com! |

I used Kent Marine RX-P, because of all my scaleless fish and tetras. It works great, is safe and easy. Ich is not a worry for me.
