I have a male Paradise that has a large lump around the gill area? It`s moving normal and eating as well. It looks like it might blow up at any time...dose anyone know what it might be? Thank you.

Hi there,
Is there any posibility you could post a picture of the lump?
Is it white, red, puffy? Does it look like a pimple or boil?
My suggestion would be to do a few water changes regularly, to keep it nice n clean, if there is no scaleless fish in the tank, you could add 1 tablespoon of aquarium salt per 10 gallons of water, pre-dissolved and added in 3 portions over a days time. This would help cleanse the wound and prevent infection if it ruptures.
If you have any melafix on hand you could go ahead n dose the recommended dosage for 4 days in a row, followed by a 50% water change.
I would just keep an eye on it while you do these things, and see how it progresses.

I do have pictures of the fish but I can`t seem to be able to post it on this site. If you have a public email add. I`d love to send it to you...I really like to know if I can save this fish. I`ve had for 2 years and I`d hate to lose it like this.

Thanks

This isnt swelling behind the gills,or a parasite cyst, this is a massive swelling of the stomach cavity, this could be down to a number of things, from massive overfeeding/constipation , to internal parasites, to gaseous bacterial inflation from diseases like aeromonas. Its also quite pale for a male, and should it turn out to be female, egg binding is another possibility.

What do you feed it on at the moment, how much, and how often? Had any unexplained deaths of fish smaller than this one lately?

Ps, dont think salt will do much good here, but an antiparasitic food like the jungle labs formula just might.

It does indeed look like an internal problem,
I dont see any pineconing of scales, do you see any scales poking out like a pine cone?
When you said a lump I was thinking of a pimple type lump.
This looks like exactly what Longhaired has said - either internal parasites, egg bound female, constipation, or similar.
Have you noticed any white, stringy poop? Any red things poking out of the fishes anus?
Id suggest feeding nothing but skinned canned or frozen peas for about a week and see if this cures the problem.
An anti-parasitic food would also be a good idea following the pea solution. This will rule out constipation and parasites.

I feed the tank Tatra for Tropical Fish twise a day and I have not seen and white poop. Also there has been no deaths of fish. I`ve had all my fish for at least 2 years and this is the only trouble I`ve had. Should I put this fish by itself till it gets well....I`m afraid it might affect other fish.

Again, try feeding some canned or frozen (thawed) peas with the outer peal removed for a couple of days. If its constipation that will rule it out.
Anti-Parasitic food fed for a few days to a week after the peas will eliminate most common internal parasites.
You can certainly quarantine the fish.

All I can say is basically what SVS has said but with the peas I always cook them first then break them up taking the outer skin off. I have that the food meds can work but again only for certain problems.

It has been a few days since the problem was poster is there any signs of improvement? I also suggest you could take it to a good LFS and they "MIGHT" be able to assist you.
