Hi there
Am new at this so forgive me now.
We have a male and female kribensis - have lost 2 males and now the third male is breathing funny - any ideas why he would be doing this. He is still coloured up just not very active and the weird breathing.
He is also doing a lot of swimming on the spot.
We can't see any visiable cause of this.
The tank has been established since just after Xmas (its a 3ft tank - 160 litres) and we have not lost fish due to the tank just from fighting. Had the PH and everything checked last weekend before I brought this 3rd kribensis.
Any help or directions would be greatly appreciated.
Am in Australia.

It might help if you say what state and roughly where you are. There are very good reasons for this as many parts of Aust is having water problems.
Let us assume that the tank has cycled and it is OK to add fish.
Filtration what type do you have and how often also how do you clean it?
Water change what percentage did you change and did you add any thing to the water?

I would like to see a full water parameters now also a full test of your water supply this is extremely important.

The quicker this can be done the quicker we can help you.

Also do you have any live plants if so what and how much?

Thanks for that.

On speaking with the guys at the pet store they said to look for eggs as he might be fanning them - sure enough there are eggs in a couple of places in the tank so we might have babies soon.

Will know for next time what info to give you next time if we have further issues.

Well disregard the above

He has since moved to another area of the tank and my hubby has done a water change and looks like they just dug a hole but can't now see eggs.

Water tested at pet store was:
Ammonia NH4 - 0.10
Nitrate No2 - 0
Nitrate NO3 - 0
PH - 7.4
Carbonate Hardness KH - 0
General hardness GH - 71.44

Water change was 15% last Sunday and has just done 15% again now. Using Aquasonic Tropical Water Conditioner and Aquasonic freshwater extra power water purifier. Using Denitrol Aquarium starter as well.

We brought the tank as a package just before Christmas and have had no issues with fish. Tank was left for a week before fish were added and water changes have been done every fortnight - now doing weekly.

We have no live plants in the tank - currently using artifical plants.

Ph has always sat around 7 since we set the tank up.

Husband is upping the temperature from 24 to 28 and we plan to do a bucket change each night for a week to see if we can settle him down and not loss him. He is a very beautiful fish but he has now started lossing his colour.

We live in Campbelltown in NSW.

Not living in NSW I do not know your area BUT and a BIG BUT if you are getting your water from the same place as Sydney or your water is treated the same as Sydney every time you do the water change you "Could" be creating more problems. At the moment because of the drought Sydney's water is not the best.

You did not mention the filtration and how often and how you clean it.

I do not know these products at all but other members should.

I always store my treated water for a week, because of my local water problems I have to take it from the hot hot water service.
At every water change I use either Sera Nitrivec or Seachem Stability to help correct some problems and to keep the good bacteria in its original state.

Live plants do help in keeping a aquarium tank in a better condition that does not mean it can not be dome without plants but live plants are certainly beneficial to the tank. You can even start off with a good cheap floating water sprite. It multipliers very quickly and is a god test to see how your water is going.

Sorry - the filter is an external filter - Aqua One 1050. Cleaned once a month with the water taken from the tank.

Unfortunately overnight we have lost the male Kribensis - all other fish are still going strong.

Have gone out this morning and purchased a full test kit to try and work out why we are losing fish.
