I bought a black veil angelfish this past weekend. He was doing great until last night when he got very lethargic. I noticed his side fins were really torn up and added some melafix to the water.
Well I came home this evening to find him dead. His eyes were cloudy. He had some white patches on him. Its hard to describe. It kind of looked like white spots...not ich though because they were bigger...and not very many. I could take a picture...if people don't mind looking at a dead fish.
I am going to call the place tomorrow and see if they have any kind of guarantee...since it has been less than a week since I bought it.
I was just wondering what this might be...so I can make sure my other fish don't get it. Could it be a type of fungus maybe?

What else is in that tank? Do you have any SAE reason for asking they and some other fish can clean the natural slime off the Angel and quickly kill them.

I don't have a SAE...I do have 3 ottos and a BN. I have never seen the ottos suck on other fish though. They are usually on rocks or on the glass.

I also have another angel, 5 flame tetras, 4 Rummynoses, 8 head and tailights, 8 corydoras sodalis, 6 panda cories, and 3 yoyo loaches.

The angel was doing fine until Thurs. night. Then it died yesterday.

Sorry to hear of your lost angel

The torn fins gave it away. Your fish was attacked, possibly the other angel, as they can be territorial, or the yo-yo loaches. (I've seen very agressive yo-yo's)
The white stuff and cloudy eyes as the fish was wounded and highly stressed. There's also the chance it could have been ill but it looked ok in the store, the stress of going to a new tank and such..... A stressed sick fish is a sitting duck for new tankmates.

It's common for a new fish to be picked on even if it's healthy. It's recommended to pull all the fish out and change around the decor before adding a new fish. Also to quarantine it for at least a month before adding to your community. I did not follow my own advice recently and added an apisto pair to my community tank without quarantine. One of the apistos died, and I lost 3 of my other fish. I only had myself to blame as I should know better. I am darn lucky my angels did not get sick.

In either way, I hope the store will replace your fish for you. Quarantine it for at least a month before adding to your tank..

Good luck

The Amazon Nut...

Thanks for the advice.

I really don't think any of my fish attacked the angel. My other angel didn't show any aggression after I put the new one in. And even after a few days the old angel was hiding a little...not being mean from what I saw.
My yoyo's stay hid most of the time. Even when they are out they don't go above the bottom of the tank. Maybe they do when I am gone...but I have watched the tank with the lights out (one room light on) and have never seen them go above the bottom.
I think the fish was beat up at the store. All the angels in the tank were about the same size and I saw one angel being aggressive towards another. I didn't buy the aggressive one or the one being picked on at the time...but that doesn't mean it picked on the same one all the time.
I shouldn't have bought it. It was just really pretty. I also should have noticed the fin damage, but I think it got worse each day and I didn't notice it until it was pretty bad.
Also, I know I should get a QT tank, but I just don't have the room or money.
Thanks for the help. I guess I should have known what happened. I just didn't know if the cloudy eyes and spots was some kind of disease that I needed to watch out for.

Good to see that it is all sorted out now. I did know that Angels can be very terrorital and like plenty of plants or structures to hide behind and call their own area.

Have a look in [link=My Profile] http://www.fishprofiles.com/forums/member.aspx?id=1935[/link] for my tank info
