Does anyone have any info on neon tetra disease? I would appreciate info on symptoms, cures if any, and what is the cause and effect. Thanks in advance!

It seems that victims usually lose color in patches on their body, most notably below the dorsal fin and around the caudal peduncle. I've noticed some infected fish "spin" and have problems swimming, and are no longer able to school with their conspecifics. No proven cure for the disease has yet been discovered, so euthanization is usually necessary to ensure that the sickness cannot spread any farther in a tank than it already has.

These previous posts about the dreaded NTD should help you out.

It's really not as common as many people think, and it's not like it strikes unnoticed. Oftentimes you can simply identify the disease in store, which means that you know which fish to avoid buying. Savvy employees should be able to tell you the history of a particular shipment of fish, and if many have been dying.

Every case of NTD that I've ever seen or heard of has been with in store fish or recent purchases. Once whichever fish has been taken home and survives for a while in the new tank, it really isn't at much risk for NTD unless a new purchase brings it home and spreads it.

Usually the symptoms exhibited by a neon tetra in your lfs is due to stress in the tanks. The stressful shipping can cause the "dizzy" appearence of the fish and the loss of color. I always reccommend asking your lfs when they get their shipments and going in two or three days after that day.

I don't think that's right, because then it would be quite common to see these symptoms on unafflicted fish. It is quite apparent when a fish has come down with Neon Tetra Disease because it loses the color from just certain places on the body, as opposed to all over. The spinning can appear in fish with other illnesses, but I consider it to be a secondary symptom of NTD because I haven't always seen it in victims.

My Neon came down with it after having it over 1 year. He/she lost the red in patches by his tail fin and then the tail kind of kinked out of shape. I put him down as to not spread to any other fish. (Note: I have not added anyfish to my tank in over 6 months)

See my profile (link below) for fish and setup.

When I first started keeping fish 35+ years ago it was a very common thing then and it is still around today but not as common thank goodness. If I remember corectly it used to be treated with antibiotics which were difficult to obtain

This is the main reason I recommend members to buy only good quality Cardinal Tetras. Also never buy on day of delivery wait at least 3-4 days.

Have a look in [link=My Profile] http://www.fishprofiles.com/forums/member.aspx?id=1935[/link] for my tank info
