As a retired vet-tech, I've always kept an "on-hand" pharmacy for my pets...an emergency kit, as it were. I've never seen any mention on this site (or any others) as to what would be a basic "must-have" list of drugs etc, to have on hand. Obviously you could go to the LFS and buy every med they have, but this would not be financially feasable for most of us I think. Any suggestions out there? Or is it simply easier for most folk to buy their meds as they need them. I'm a good 45 minutes from a decent fish store, so that kind of thing is less suitable for me.

I keep Melafix and Pimafix on call, and I also have a bottle of Methylene blue and some leftover QuickCure from last year. I suppose the best things to keep on hand would be a favorite ich medication and a couple of weak, general meds like the Melafix. Personal preference plays a part though, and special situations apply also. For instance, I've had the Meth blue ready for the first time I try to hatch fish eggs.

I keep the following always on-hand.... Ok, I'm a freak :

- Methelyne Blue
- Salt ( no additives )
- QuICK-Cure ( formalin + green malachite )
- Minocycline ( gram negative antibiotic )
- Amoxicilin ( gram positive + negative )
- Metronidazole ( gram positive antibiotic )
- Iso-propylic Alcohol

That's it.

Questor : Gawd you are good! How did you come up with that? Now shhhhhushhhhhhh.... it's a secret between you and me. I wouldn't want others to think THAT I INJECT MYSELF ANTIBIOTICS ALONG WITH A NICE DOSE OF ISO-PROPYLIC ALCOHOL !

Oooops... I think I said it too loud. Oh well...

Sponge
PS : I love you Questor and don't ask why and please don't tell my wife. :%)

SERIOUSLY NOW.... I use alcohol as a solvent. Some antibiotics do not disolve well in water. [img src='/images/forums/halo.gif' border=0]

for an on-hand pharmacy, i just keep melafix and prima fix. Generally, every other disease's progression not covered by these can be slowed down enough for me to run to the store to get he needed stuff. If I have anything that i would buy EXTRA for (for current use and to keep some on hand) would be parasite medication.

Melafix covers bacteria issues, prima covers fungal issues, copper based products cover parasites, most diseases can be cured, or at least controlled, with these or a combination of them.

Why SpongeBob...I'm flattered! I don't know why you'd love me either...obviously not for my aquaria expertise!

So, it looks like Melafix and Pimafix are staples...so I'll defintely pick up some of that. I already have Maracyn, Quick Cure, and Jungle Parasite Cure, so my pharmacy looks like it'll be reasonable?

I won't say anything about Pimafix as I don't know that product. But, Melafix is a FRAUD. Scientific studies have proven this product to fail in doing what it claims it can do. Google it and see for yourselves.

Sorry, no links to provide, no time to search either. I did it once, so I guess you can do it too.

The reason I keep Melafix is because I find it to be helpful in healing ripped or otherwise damaged fins. I would not use it for fin rot or other actual diseases, but Melafix does seem to aid the regeneration of fins affected by general wear-and-tear.
