Sounds lie bacterial septacaemia to me , and that can be treated with antibiotics like oxytetracycline, furan, doses of maracyn , myaxazin, melafix etc, but you have to establish what is causing that to happen and if the water quality is involved or not. If its not the water quality at fault you could kick off with melafix to address any bacterial issues, but if theres no improvement over say 3 or so days, perhaps consider weighing in there with heavier impact meds like the antibiotics proper. There is always a risk of affecting the water quality and killing the filter when you use them though.

Sometimes ammonia or nitrite levels can cause very similar symptoms, so as ever in the the hospital room, if you can include your water perameters it is most useful to do so.

Your water peramiters would certainly help here, considering that the fish were perfectly healthy. The infection would have to be imported if all your water peramiters are correct. Have you introduced anything to the tank other that at a water change. Even thought you added the four fish they could have been safe or imported the problem and it is not effecting them.
Some local authorities are adding strange things to our water suppply and some of these can actually kill all the good bacteria inyour tank extremly quickly.

Have a look in [link=My Profile] http://www.fishprofiles.com/forums/member.aspx?id=1935[/link] for my tank info
