I jsut noticed that my lil von rio tetra has ich. I swear he did not have it this morning. Is there something I can do very quick that will help him? Will melafix work on ich? I did not realize he had it and I bought some other fish today and I can not return them at 8 at night. Will raisisng the teperature harm new fish such as cardinal tetras or other von rio tetras?

what else is in the tank. salt helps but not with scaleless fishes in the tank.

also a tip that can help u save hundreds, get a QT tank so u can add the new fish into there and if there are any problems, it woun't kill ur entire stock.

learned that out hte hard way, lost a pair of angels like that.

I have just checked the Melafix label and no mention of Ich treatment. There are plenty of good treatments around. If you have scaleless fish loaches etc you are limited to what can be used check the label to make sure.

Certainly raise the temp this makes the parasite have a faster life cycle and can be killed very quickly. You might be able to add Malifex with the treatment but you can certainly add it after.

Limit the feeding and turn off the lighting this will help to reduce the stress in all the fish.

Just pick up an ich medication, there's plenty out there some specifically formulated for sensitive fish such as many of the bottom feeders.

There is no "quick" cure for ich because of the way ich gets killed. It is not treated until it has acutally fallen off the fish, which is why it's important to treat for the full ammount of time for a given medication (usually about a weeks time).

Raising the temperature to kill ich is often not effective as it has to be raised high enough that it will also kill the fish (90-95F). Raising the temperature a few degress AFTER you've added medications can be helpful as it speeds up the life cycle causeing it to fall off the fish faster then be killed by the meds.

Well I turned up the heater on my tank but the temperature has not gone up it is one of those preset/adjustable heaters. I can't exactley figure it out. I will go to Wal-Mart for the medicine today, I was not wantign to go to Wal-Mart last night after all of this happen I was just too tired but I will do that first thing today since there are no fish stores open today. It is a shame that there is nothign open on sundays, especially when you have an emergency and need to treat it and don't happen to have the meds on hand at the moment. Thanks for your help guys I will let you know how it goes.

The only fish that are in the tank at this moment are
6 Cardinals
6 Von Rio Tetras

When this is gone I will be adding 6-8 cories. I also have live plants.

One other quick question. If I go set up a QT tank, How long do I need to keep the fish in it before adding it to my main tank?
I ahve an empty 10 gallon right now that I coudl probably use for one next time I hope that will work.
