one of our rams has gone very dark in colour and is just sitting on the bottom, it isnt clasping its fins but it is gasping slightly but seems to have lost the use of its gills on one side,
water parameters are fine and there are no symptoms on any other fish.

is there anything i can do to help it?

It could be an infection but your decription is very vague at best try both PimaFix and MelaFix. Also increase the airation as much as possible.
Is there any damage to the gills cuts or something caught there. One advice I often give is take it to a good LFS and get a quick opion as they can see the fish also take a good water sample and ger a full water peramiters test.

What else is in the tank is it possible the problem could be caused by another fish/object in the tank.

Have a look in [link=My Profile] http://www.fishprofiles.com/forums/member.aspx?id=1935[/link] for my tank info

i think it may have been caused in a dispute with the other ram, although i am considering a possiblity of an internal infection as i recently added 3 new fish.

It doesn't sound like you can pin anything down yet, which is why I would avoid treating right now. A water change is all I'd do, or even just keep the fish under observation. Your description of the ram's behavior sounds like stress to me, that's how they often act when upset over something. Have you noticed anything different in the way it interacts with the other fish?

to try and give a few more details it looks as though its gill plate on one side is stuck in quite an open position.
there are aslo a couple of white areas around the gill and eye, and also on top of the head, it doesnt look like fungus at this stage and is deffinately not whitespot.
the behaviour of the fish is generally lethargic and weak swimming, mainly hiding.

i will try and get a deceny pic to post.
