My female betta decided to take on a piece of food that was too big for her. Her mouth is stuck open now. Although she doesnt seemed stressed it has been 12 hours since she did this. I'm beginning to wonder if its a piece of gravel its been so long.

Anything I can do for her?

can you see it or is it inside her mouth? You could try using tweezers to pluck it out...

Maybe it's better to post this thread in the hospital forum.

I would try to see what is it & try to remove it if possible.

I cant see what is in there. All I know is that after food time her mouth was stuck open. Surely if it was food it would of softened by now and she would of been able to swallow it or something.

This morning she still has her mouth open but swimming quite peacefully. I guess thats something good!

I remember going thru a similar experience with someone, for some reason I'm thinking it was Perky....in the end the piece worked itself loose so you might want to give it a few more days rather than trying physically to remove it ....just an idea dunno if that's the best.

She's on a forced diet for now. What ever is there is still stuck and food time last night was meaningless to her. Guess i'll just wait it out. She's not distressed or anything.

Lindy, if still after a couple of days she is still "stuck open" I think I read once that Shearonlynne was able to "disengage" a pebble/rock/whatever from her goldie (yes i know bigger, but still) but catching the fish and "popping" the jaw open, like you would with a cat or dog, and it should pop out, you might need someone to help you with a flashlight (not ryan) if it doesn't pop out to see if something is stuck inside...of course if you have a really good lfs nearby with someone there you would trust, i'd bottle/bag her up and take her in and let them see if they could help....

You didn't by chance see what the silly girl tried to swallow did you? I know my bettas are always picking at the gravel like goldfish and cichlids heidi
