Unexplained Death and Death after Birth | |
KieranW Small Fry Posts: 5 Kudos: 2 Votes: 1 Registered: 04-May-2008 | Ok so when I started out I had about 5 tetras, 2 angelfish and a bristlenose. After about 10 weeks of looking after these fish I had my smaller angelfish disappear. I checked the filter, no angelfish. I checked for a body in the tank, no angelfish. I checked the floor incase somehow it got out, no angelfish. The only possibilities I can think of is if somehow my cat got it (but it has NEVER tried to get into my tank and it doesn't seem to notice it's there). Also another tank in my house has guppies, they breed on their own even though we have done nothing to trigger or help breeding. The mothers usually die just before or after birth. As a side note, we have been feeding the babies egg yolk mixed with water (fish shop told us too) and crushed fish flakes. Since we had like 80 babies we can't tell if many died or not. Egg yolk is one of the old school tried-and true foods for baby livebearers. Instead of mixing it with water, try squeezing it through a loosely-woven fabric (such as cheesecloth or a bandanna) directly into the tank water, very little at a time. I doubt that's what's killing them unless you're overfeeding (ideal feeding regimen for baby fish is several small meals per day because they have small stomachs but need to eat often to get the energy they need. The female guppies may also not be getting the nutrition they need for making babies. Lots of meaty foods like bloodworms help with this, as well as a good quality flake (Hikari or Tetra are good) food for daily feedings. Also, a 60L (15 Gallon) tank is MUCH too small for angelfish and BNs. How often do you do water changes? Do you have water test results for either tank? (Ammonia, Nitrate, Nitrite, pH). It's very likely that the deaths in either or both tanks are related to ammonia poisoning. What size tank are the guppies in? ><> |

brandeeno Mega Fish Posts: 929 Kudos: 636 Registered: 13-Sep-2007 | yes, i agree with superlion. the angel could have been eaten by the others, but if that you sould probably still find a skeleton as the small fish wouldnt be able to eat that... also bad water wuality could be killing ht guppies or bad feeding. I wouls suggest you up you meaty foods like bloodworms to at least twice a week for livebearer breeding... i still stick true to my invreeding statement though as many LFS bought guppies are so inbred that they have no tolerance to any external problems or infection... \\\\\\\"an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of the cure\\\\\\\" |
