About a week ago I noticed a milky white film on one eye of one of my angels. After a day or so it looked like it was peeling off but now it's covered over again. It looks almost like a cataract covering the whole eye. He's eating and acting normal so far. The other angel in the tank has been picking on him a bit but they bicker back and forth all the time so that's nothing new.

Any idea what it could be??

thanks

That's a fungus called popeye. Treat it with maracyn as soon as possible before the fish looses the eye. If it does loose the eye its not the end of the world. I have three convicts that only have one eye. Whats your ammonia level in the tank? That is a common cause of popeye among cichlids. Just out of curiosity was it the left eye?

Thanks, I'll get some maracyn in the tank right away. It is his left eye.

I just checked parameters with a 5 in 1 strip and got a low nitrite reading. I'm going out now to get maracyn and will pick up a more accurate test for ammonia. I test for ph with a liquid test kit regularly but not the other parameters. I mistakenly thought since my tank is 4 years old that ammonia wouldn't be an issue.

Ammonia is always an issue. All of my cichlids that have gotten popeye have had it only in their left eye. I wonder if there is a correlation or just luck.

i dont think its pop eye because pop eye is when a fishes eye swells and kinda moved away from the face of the fish it can also pop out of the fishes eye socet but what u are describing is more like what u said cateracks or the fish my be going blind it also could be a type of fungis or bacteria so the fish should be treated. thats my opinon but that dont mean that im right or wrong but im jsut saying it dosent sound like pop eye to me

I've had experience with cloudiness over an eye being the first sign of popeye. Though the eye might not buldge out at first, if left untreated, this will most likely occur.

Here's an update;I did a 25% water change and added maracyn and he is doing fine, the eye is just about clear. The owner of the lfs said it's also possible since the two angels chase eachother a lot that the eye was injured from hitting an ornament in the tank. Anyway he is doing alright now.

thanks for the input.
