first of all, just to make it clear: this one has nothing to do with the other one (RIP). they were in different tanks, no equipment changed tanks since they were introduced. so I assume it's a whole new story.

this female Betta injured her upper lip (she watched the guppies dig up for fallen food pellets and joined them). it seems like her upper lip is scrapped, and somewhat swolen. she also lost appetite and seem miserable. she keeps gulping air from the surface more than usual. her belly also seems whiter than usual, and maybe a little swolen (maybe constipation. no bulging scales or anything like that). I isolated her in a 1G tank for the meantime.

what should I do to help her recuperate?

damn, what a bad week!

I would use a good medication before any infection set in. You could try a cooked squashed pea if she is constipated. Also some stress coat will also help.

Have a look in [link=My Profile]http://

Throw in some melafix and pimafix too, if it persists you might want to consider antibiotic as she might have septacaemia from the lip wound.

I third the suggestions. Medications to prevent infection, and good clean water. Since it's a one gallon tank you should be doing water changes daily. I'm not sure I'd risk changes more frequently than that just because of the possible shock, but be sure that no uneaten food remains in the tank or settles on the bottom.

The cooked squashed pea that was mentioned is a good idea. Simply take a fresh or frozen pea (canned only if that's all you can find) and soften it between your fingers till it pops out of the outer skin. When I'm feeding peas to a betta I'll take each of the halves and splice them further into quarters and eights with my nail and feed one piece at a time. If he doesnt eat them dont force it, but I'd hold off on other foods till either he's eating his veggies or the swelling goes down. If you have fresh garlic you can try soaking each piece of pea in a bit of the pressed garlic juice. Garlic acts as an appitite enhancer, one taste of the food and you shouldnt have eating problems again .

thank you all for the good advice!

for now, I don't think there's any need of medication. the lip looks a litle swolen, but clean, and it's been a few days.

I hope the stress doesn't kill her in the end. she's realtively young.
