I believe that my betta has dropsy but i do not think it is just dropsy. I think the dropsy is secondary. I noticed her gills swelling rapidly and began treating her with maracyn-two. Her gills have continued to swell and today i noticed that her scales were sticking out like a pine cone. Previously to today her scales were fine as far as i could tell. She is very active and does not sit still long enough for me to get a good look at her. The only reason i noticed the gill problem is that she is a pale yellow and her gills have turned bright red and stick out like she is displaying 24/7. I think i saw a worm in her gills, vut as i said she does not stay still very long. Is there anything i can do for her. I've read that i should give her a salt bath but nowhere has told me the number of teaspoons or table spoons per number of gallons or what type of salt to use. Any help would be welcomed. This is my favorite betta. I hate to see her suffering like this. She is still active and eating and behaving like her usual self aside from the gills and scales. Thanks ahead of time everyone!!!!

I hope that you can help your betta with whatever is bothering it. Here is a link for a good site for illnesses. [link=http://healthybetta.com/]http://healthybetta.com/" style="COLOR: #009999[/link]

I just noticed something else about her. I placed her in a new bowl so i could inspect the water in her old bowl. He feces ahve gotten progressively lighter. the last one that she just passed was almost white. The feces on the bottom of the bowl also developed a stringy white covering looking like tiny hairs that stick out all around the dropping. the water is also filled with tiny hairlike bits of stuff. I noticed this when i held the bowl up to a bright light. I also noticed that she had one little bunch of the stringy stuff stuck to the top of her head right before her top fin. Do you think that the cause is fungal instead of parasitic or bacterial?

My best advice would be to take your Betta girl to a good local LFS and see what they have to say. If you have more than one in your area go to all of them.

Well guys, I have good and bad news. Good news first: After a long and very aggressive treatment with Maracyn and Maracyn-two tablets by Mardell labs, My little girl has beaten whatever was causing her gills to swell and redden. And... SHE BEAT DROPSY!!!!!! She looked like a yellow pine cone. Now she is back to normal!! I'm so excited becasuse she is my alltime favorite fish!!
Now for the bad news. I treated the rest of my fish because i had used the same net for all of them prior to noticing the dropsy/gill infection thing but with a lower concentration. I believe the medication stressed an already sick fish and he died this morning. He was a beautiful green/blue crowntail male that my little brother just adored. I hate to have to break the news but I will never find another that is similar enough to fool my brother. :#(

Well... I thought she beat it, but I woke this morning to find her dead in her bowl. All of her scales were normal and she was active and eating and flaring and looking so good, but she died after fighting for so long. I wish I knew what happened!!!!!! :#(
