Dropsy is a result of internal problems. Often associated with poor water conditions and in some fish with digestion problems. I say not directly because in the case of some tropical fish (bettas for example) they will continue to eat but not digest foods in low temps. The food will then rot in their stomachs with dropsy and other things being the end result. In this case I'd suggest increasing water change frequency, be sure to add in the meds that you take out with each change. Hold off on feedings or reduce to a very small ammount and make sure you're giving plenty of fresh veggie matter. If it's not too advanced a case of dropsy we may be able to turn it around. Peas are generally the easiest (and cheapest) veggie to feed but seaweed sheets are also good for goldfish. ^_^[hr width='40%'] The life, the love, You die to heal. Occurrences: Dropsy can occur in individuals in a healthy environment or fish which are in otherwise poor condition. Treatment/Control: If possible, separate affected individuals in a quarantine tank. Treat with MelaFix or PimaFix. If treatment seems ineffective, treat with Furan 2 or Triple Sulfa. Joey my lovely male used to get like that. i am studying her as i type her mouth seems kinda open? and she just hangs in the water. i know they are lazy but she was never like this in the main tank. thanks for you help, excellent link keith, been reading lots! because I don't actually believe she is cured i am going to continue to treat her with mela and prima fix which i was doing for the fin rot and white patches. despite being externally better, i am worried something is wrong internally. If anything she should have been fed a shelled pea. ^_^[hr width='40%'] The life, the love, You die to heal. The hope that starts, The broken hearts... For bettas I give them just a small piece till they get a taste for veggies. It does help if they've been off foods for a day or two as they're of course more willing to have a nibble at anything that moves. ^_^[hr width='40%'] The life, the love, You die to heal. Pammy![]() ![]() Hobbyist Posts: 148 Kudos: 130 Registered: 30-Mar-2004 ![]() ![]() | I have a betta girl that had a cloudy eye and then it got worse and turned into dropsy. I thought I was going to loose her last weekend. But, I started her on Maracyn-two tablets and she is making a full recovery. It is mostly something internal, like a baterial infection. I swear by Maracyn-two now. Melafix & Pimafix just don't seem to cut it when it comes to dropsy. I was treating my girl with that before I started the maracyn 2. I thought she was going to die, because she sat at the same spot near the surface for two whole days. As soon as I started the maracyn-two, a day later she was moving around her tank. And ever since she has been getting more active and she's even started to eat again. What you have described about your girl sounds like what was happening to mine. So, i would start the Maracyn-two now. And it's not that much money to get a 25watt heater for her tank. Betta's are just a lot happier when they can have warm water. I kept my first betta in a 1.5 bowl, unheated and he just seem to circle, slowly, the same plant every day. Then i got him a 5g, filtered, heated tank and he became so active and colorful and happy. I'll never keep a betta in a small unheated bowl ever again. So, when you can afford it, invest in a heater, you'll not regret it. ![]() HTH... -Pamela ![]() Last edited by Pammy Hina at 28-Aug-2005 22:34 Last edited by Pammy Hina at 28-Aug-2005 22:35 |
