I've never had this happen in freshwater fish but in my marine tanks I've had a few fish come down with something called "pop eye" and I could never cure it and the fish later died. I don't know if this is the same thing or not and if it is I'm sorry and I don't like being the bearer of bad news. I wish you the best of luck!

I am also betting its Popeye.
You can try treating with Melafix,
I had a cory that got stressed out when my big tank blew, and he got 2 popped eyes i thought for sure he was going to lose them both. I started treatment with dose of melafix every 2nd day, and water change before treatment and after every 4th dose. He cleared up noticeably in only 4 days! He is fine now, but unfortunately seems to be either blind or partially blind, his pupils are both keyhole shaped now. But hey hes happy healthy, and thats definetly better than deceased!

NitrAte of two? Never seen a test that can measure that accuratly (I want it!).

Pop eye can happen just from injury. Melafix if on hand won't hurt anything, water changes are also a good idea.
Also caused by poor water quality (which is part of the reason I questioned your nitrAte reading >.&lt. Increased water changes will help, if it's really an infection dosing with tetracycline using a hospital tank as needed, may help.

This is where the info was obtained

Look here

Pop-eye

Caused by: bacterial infection, parasite infestation, metabolic disorders, and poor water quality.

Symptoms: one or both eyes swell and project from the head. In severe cases, the eye can burst from the socket.

Occurrences: Pop-eye typically affects only one or two fish in an aquarium or pond, and is not considered to be infectious.

Treatment/Control: affected fish can be treated with MelaFix or

Melafix and aquarium salt. That's what healed my betta girl up. I don't know what else you have in the tank and if they're salt tolerant, though. It was easy with my girl because I just moved her to a small hospital tank.

Good luck and hope your fishy gets better.

I cant find the lil guy now soo i presume he passed away and my ghost knif and hopolo finished off the body.

Babel: i dont own a nitrate test kit i just go to my lfs and they test it for me. Last reading was on sat and it was around zero. So i estimated that since then it would have gone up too around .

NitrAtes @zero....is this a heavily planted tank? If not then I'd question the accuracy of the test.
Having your own kit is extreamly useful and I'd urge getting one ASAP (if available get the master test kit). I know they're quite a bit more expensive in oz compaired to the states, I just don't trust LFS's to give accurate results.

I have quite a few run ins with popeye and my convict cichlids. I has mostly affected only the left eye and not proved fatal unless it blinds nboth eyes. If you catch it when there is only a light film over the eye it is reversable. If the fish looses the eye it's not the end of the world. They are able to adapt and survive without the vision of one eye. Good luck!
