ok i got sum metronidazole today, ive done a deep gravel vac, cleaned all my ornoments and plants, done a 30% water change, and given them there dose according to my local vet.so does this all sound about rite, have i missed something.the vet said there was 2 ways he treated his fish succsessfully(both ways with metronidazole).crushing up the tablet and doseing the water, and dosing there food,he said to go with dosing the water first,if nothing changes then dose there food aswell.i gave him a list of ALL my water parameters, tanksize, tank occupants, everything i could think of.he came to the conclusion that they have polluted the water due to there size getting bigger and he also said to get a mini reef.the last thing he to me was, theres not much piont treating them if you dont no how the problem started.well guys wish me luck, and ill let yous no how they respond to the treatment.

Sounds like you have done the correct thing by talking to a Vet our vet admits they know nothing about fish or fish keeping at all.

Got the advice, took it , went to see a professional and got what you needed, no dithering about. Nice one mate

Often its the waiting about that kills the fish, a lot of folks leave it far to late for treatment.

Told you you could get metro in Oz . How much did it cost you to see the vet btw? 10 bucks!! Laughing all the way to the bank
Im lucky enough to have a south african vet who used to work in zoos and wildlife parks there, so his knowledge of small animal medicine , including fish is second to none, at least when my knowledge fails his usually backs mine up successfully. Hes a rare vet, he lets me perform a lot of my own treatments, and Ive helped him with animal handling (ie large aggressive reptiles and mammals) when his assistants arent quite up to the job, (no sense of personal danger me, ) and he has helped me with understanding treatments, and allowed me to watch a surgery or two. I remember the look on their faces when I brought them a 17 foot burmese python who had swallowed some barbecue tongs But the surgery was amazing, he managed to remove the tongs- and im not kidding here- without the animal losing more than about 4 drops of blood.

Amazing vet, im very lucky.

yes he is a great vet,we went throo all my feeding procedures, water parameters,he asked me a hundred questions, and we got to the bottom of it, and now i no for future refrence what to do, and not what to do..ok thanx for the praise,it took me the best part of 2 days of searching with no luck,my girlfriend said what are u going to do,i said i didnt care what it costed or if i had to drive interstate to find some sort of treatment, there was no way i was just guna watch them get eaten away then die without giving it my best,it was a challenge being the first time that my fish had this desease,(knowing absolutely nothing about hith or how to treat it)i was in a frenzy but with all the fast help from the people on this site, now my oscars have a heaps better chance of pulling throo.thanx guys i am more than gratefull.im still doing daily water changes using my buffer, but one thing im not sure of,do i still dose my water each day with the metronidazole,or every few days,i didnt ask the vet if it was possible to overdose themone more thing, when do you guys think i will see a change in there skin,(healing up)because there was NO change in there behavour,if they didnt have hith you would swear they are fine.

Metranidazole is fairly safe to use, its overdose level is usually set pretty high, but that depends on the level of the active drug in the supension or tablet you have. Give the vet a call to be sure and make sure he knows your accurate aquarium volume.

Hexamita doesnt always cause the fish any debilitation for weeks, then one day you notice the colour change radically, the holes get bigger, and then its usually less than 48 hours till death. They often stop feeding in the last 48 hours. At least thats my experience of it so far.
