Okay.... tell me if this is a normal thing???

I hate to say this, but the other day i drained my 55 gallon and moved it to another room, i left about one inch of water in the bottom, and most of my smaller fish and pleco in the tank...

Well while i was busy cleaning up, my boyfriend was filling the tank back up, and he had the bright idea to turn the water to warm, so the fish wouldnt "get shock" well anyhow... i went back in the room and i see steam off the water, it was HOT!!!! so, i yelled a little, and quickly changed it back to luke-warm, and noticed he had "killed" a bunch of my molly babies and an adult sailfin. so i took them out and realized they werent dead. so i put them in a quarantine tank and watched them.

One by one, each of the fish not only got better, but are completely back to normal.

It freaked me out, cuz these were fish that were just barely breathing and wouldnt even move they're bodies.. they just layed on their sides in a breeding net.

is it normal, if the fish got burned or whatever, for the fish to just get better??????

I've never experienced anything like that before! That's pretty cool. I can only imagine that they went into shock with the hot water on them. It must not have done any damage though, for them to get better so easily.

Whatever happened, you sure are lucky! Not tell that boyfriend to get his act together .

I came home once to a tank that was quite close to 100F. Goldfish was gulping air and the zebra danios were huddled near the bottom of the tank barely moving. Both fish have much more of a tolerance to temp differences than most fish do, I assume thats what saved them :%). I let the temp drop gradually and they were fine the next day.
My real father told me a story once from before I was born of how the water that the goldfish was in was way too cold (or was it hot) when he changed the water and he thought it was dead but grabed it from the bowl () and held it under the faucet () and it came came back !...somehow that story was supposed to make me feel better or something ...anyway...I've heard of things like that happening, you were lucky.
And give that boy some lessons either stay away from the fish or learn what he's doing....oh and give him a flick with a wetfish net for being dense.

Hi there,
I assume you are using a python to fill your tank.
There is a surefire way to ensure this never happens.
Make the water temp the same as in the tank by putting the end of the python in a bucket with a thermometer and adjusting accordingly.
You should never finger test the water to check temp, you should always use a thermometer.
I always ensure the water temp is exactly within 1 degree when I change the water in my tank to prevent shock from different temps.

Its not strictly normal, most fish die!

How lucky are you? Id throw some stuff in the water like stress coat, as the mucous layers and gills may be damaged, plus you may get swim bladder problems later. Watch them closely over the coming weeks, and keep those temps steady.

thanks for all the replies... yeah i definately gave the boy a big butt-chewing... but the fish seem okay, they're eating and everything.. i poured a half a bottle of stress coat in there, and all the perameters are okay.. so, we'll see how it goes.....

i guess i am lucky..

I know how you feel though, my gf has the nasty habit of unplugging aquarium heaters and not turning them back on again when she uses the hairdryer. She may not last long...

Why would you unplug a fish aquarium heater to dry your hair? Where does she dry her hair? That is weird. Tell her she needs to dry her hair in the bathroom like normal people. She also needs to stop trying to kill your fish!

That is not very nice of her to try to kill your fish!

lo its not a deliberate attempt to kill my fish- its just I use all the plug sockets in the house, and she needs to plug the hairdryer in somewhere. I dont mind if the heaters go off for 10 minutes, it helps the thermostat in them to reset anyway, its when she forgets to plug them in again....
