Hi folks,

I've been gone for 7 days over the xmas holidays to find I lost a platy. There is also a guppy with visible ick. I have a few other livebearers and a bn pleco in this tank, plus mts snails and an amano shrimp. Besides the guppy, the other fish appear to be fine.

Due to the snails, shrimp and bn the usual meds are not a good idea. Raising the temp will cook the plants. (tank temp is 76F) What would you suggest to treat the ick ?
Are bn plecos sensitive to freshwater aquarium salt ?

Should I ride it out, add melafix and improve the water quality ? (water quality has slipped over time, I can test etc but want to mainly hear safe treatment options.

Thanks in advance,
Da

Hi,
I'm surprised that no one has answered you yet.
There are two active ingredients in todays Ich
medications, copper or formaldehyde. I don't know
what is available to you. Generally, the copper is more
toxic to some fish, plants, and invertebrates. If your
tank has sensitive critters, then try and find the
medication that uses the formaldehyde.
Each product will list the precautions on the container
including which fish should not be exposed to that product.

Hi Frank

Thanks for your response. I'll check out if the lfs has a formaldehyde based med. I also found out from a breeder the bn pleco will tolerate salt but that I should dose half the amount. I haven't yet added it yet, can it be mixed with formaldehyde ?

What about potassium permanganate or metronidazole for ick ? I totally forgot I have both on hand.

The guppy is ick free today but I trust the icks have fallen into the gravel & will hit free swimming stage soon causing another hit. I can't really vac in there for all the plants. I did 3 smaller feedings instead of one larger feeding since the fish are all still eating well & I have water degassing for the first 15% water change.

Hi there,
for Ich I use Kent Marine RX-P.
Its all natural, safe for use on freshwater and
saltwater fish, and safe for all scaleless fish and
inverts. It works like a charm.
I would highly recommend it to treat ich.
Ive used it several times with great success on even
sensitive wild caught catfish and plecos, and on shrimp.
