following on from earlier post i ended up removing Tetras from planted tank into QT tank and treated them last week with Protozin. they still appear to have some fuzzy stuff on there mouths so im going to repeat treatment for another week. they seem ok appart from the fact there no longer eating the Tetra flakes ive been feeding so i will try them with some live foods.
my Q is would you be inclined to still treat the main tank to kill any disease that may still be in there? there are still bottom dwellers living in there but none of them are showing any signs of illness? i dont want to get the all clear with the Tetras then put them back in the main tank for them to get sick again!! i was really lucky to catch them FIRST attempt but dont think they will be that easy if i have to catch them again!
if i did have to treat the main tank it would have to be safe for plants, none staining, and ok for scaleless fish.
thanks for any input

If you are worried about the main tank, you could use some Melafix and Primafix. Be careful not to over do it as they can take oxygen out of the water, but it will not harm plants or fish and will not stain your tank (but will make the water look milky white - until you do a water change). I use both together and have never had any problems with either.

I have also used them together and not a problem. Yes you will have to do several water changes. Also add some airation this certainly does help. It also could make the top surface a bit frothy. As wall as this keep adding a good bacteria regually when you do each water change.

Slow but steady is the way to go.

I think what he means is, add something like "Cycle" - to replace the nitrifying bactera that keep the tank healthy. Some medicines are hard on the "good bacteria" allowing your ammonia and nitrates to go up drastically. I have not had any problems with melafix or primafix, however.

Its not snake oil I can assure you there are several good brands that you can buy including a live Bacteria which must be kept in the fridg.

The reason for using it at every water change is.

I am not a water chemist or a specialist in that field.

The good bacteria in you tank does not have a long life and it mutates its self and at each mutation it gradually differs from the origional to a point that it is nothing like the good type of bacteria it should be.

There are others here on FP that can explain it in more technical terms. All I know it works. If it had not been for the live Bacteria I would not have solved my deaths problem as something came through my water and killed all the good bacteria.
