I would take a good guess at wrong diet. Too much of the same food, lack of essential vitamins and minerals.

Poor water quality might also be a cause but I would rather go with the diet.

Usually for the same reasons humans do .

Too much protein is often a #1 cause, especially in fish such as goldfish that do need their greens. Too much dry foods is also a cause. Since many fish get simply one type of food (flake or pellet) which is often dry and may be combined with a treat food of worms (heavy protein) fish that need more of a omnivore diet end up constipated.

No wonder the pea treatment usually works .

Hi Dan,
if the fish in question are indeed those nice little
rainbowfish in your picture, i will say well, rainbows do seem e to constipation!
I feed mine canned shelled peas broken into bits to all my fish once a week. I find the rainbows enjoy this a lot, and it gets em all cleaned out.
I think really that a combination of a high protein and carb diet as staple flakes usually are, coupled with the particular types of intestinal setups certain fish have, often ends in constipation.
Feeding a veggie flake like HBH 8 Veggie Flake a few times a week can help with this problem.
