Also in the kitchen, on the counter top this time, under the knife rack, I found this little gecko about an inch long. Did I mention I was cleaning?

Note: Thanks go out to Mez for providing identification of the critters.

This guy was under a rug in one of the bedrooms, it tried to get away from me by hiding inside a crack. I had to take him out since Ive heard they pack a mean punch!

the second pic of the centipede makes me think of one of those old time movie villains with the curly mustache. like it's going to start twirling those things and laughing evilly or something...

I found a cool fungus today.

Plastic spoon for scale.

Close up of gills. The macro mode on my camera sucks.

I'm pretty sure it is part of the phylum Basidiomycota, just based on morphology. I tried looking at it under a microscope, but I couldn't find any basidia or, for that matter, any type of sexual or asexual spores or spore structures, which means that I've really lost my touch with microscopy.

There were five or six of these big masses in about a 10 foot square area, so I can't imagine the hyphae network that must be beneath the tanbark.

I love fungi. I wish they had a mycology course at my uni.

* Peeks at assorted insect and other invertebrate photos *

First off ... beetle looks like a member of the Scarabeidae - these are found worldwide and are known for disposing of corpses and dung. Several species are highly iridescent, whilst others are enormous in size by usual beetle standards.

The centipede very DEFINITELY looks dangerous. It looks as if it is a Scolopendra species (this Genus is found throughout South America, and several species are also present in the Central American fauna as far north as southern Mexico) and ALL Scolopendra species are venomous. Indeed, they are potentially dangerous to Man, with the biggest of them all, Scolopendra gigantea, which is a 12-inch monster of a centipede, being capable of putting an adult human being in intensive care in hospital with its venomous bite.

The scorpion I can't identify at this stage. However, one general rule of thumb I've been told about scorpions from people in the know (including some professional invertebrate zoologists at my Entomology Society) is this. If the pincers are large (as they are on the Emperor Scorpion) then the venom from the sting is likely to pose relatively little danger to humans. Small pincers, on the other hand, usually implies a fairly potent venom. The claws on that specimen are fairly dainty, tweezer like affairs, so I'd hazard a guess that it was potentially dangerous to Man.

Hope you exercised due care and attention when removing those creatures!

Cute

Here's a funky bug I found on the side of my garage a while back o.O

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y22/PoisonWaffle/DSC00695Large.jpg

Here's what appears to be a dragonfly or mayfly nymph. He was caught in a local river last November... he metamorphosed about 3 months later.

I may go bug hunting tonight to see what kinds of fun critters I can find around the house. My guess is that I'll find a few random spiders, and that'll be about it o.O
