I also did a Google duringb out chat. At the moment and leading up to the Comonwealth Games, that is basically most of the news we get. I often watch international news and I can not recall seeing it even there. Very soon the football season starts and covers a lot.

Unfortunately since they have no oil, they don't qualify for assistance.

Adam,
Normally it would be very unwise to conflict with the Admin, but I believe your suggesting that the US hasnt invaded to "aid" the region because they have no oil. Though the US has "aided" other oil rich countries and darfur doesnt have oil doesnt mean thats the reason the US hasnt "aided" them. I believe the reason is that our president has an aproval rating under 40%, we dont even have enough troops for our current conflict, and we are over 7 trillion dollars in debt.

The UN should do its job and stop sitting on their hand while people die and stop the violence now.

I do believe my question has been answered.

It's a sad world when millions of people are murdered and it hardly makes a blip on most peoples news. Not that most people pay attention (which is different to actually watching or reading or listening) to the news.

nope.

I love in the city with the highest level of Sudanese refugees in the country, you'd think I would.

What is the UN these days anyhow? they have no teeth. If they did, the US would have been out of many years ago, and this wheat debarcle over here would be much more than a mere embarrassment.
Lets face it, the UN needs a serious shake up or to be disbanded, or beefed up with more countries having a vote.

Perhaps Australia or Canada could send troops. (just a thought) Or perhaps those not in the US who are criticizing our government could do something proactive instead of crticize.

I don't know why people expect the US to do everything, but it really ticks me off.

RS -

I've not seen anyone critisize the US in the whole Darfur stuff thats going on. If there have been underhanded comments, I must be asleep.

As for the UN, the ENTIRE organization is a joke. The Human Rights committee for example is run by iranians and alot of middle east countries who have made it quite clear that they want to wipe isreal off the map, and have their own human rights violations going on in their own country.

This oil for food program that the french got into. Another joke. Looking for nuclear weapons. Oh, another joke.

The list goes on and on. Its to the point of laughing when the UN steps in and makes some lazy comment like "if you don't stop doing this we'll have to take action", which, really translates to "if you don't stop what you're doing we're going to form a committee and think about what you're doing"

They don't actually ACT on things, they just sit and think about it.

The UN needs to be COMPLETELY reorganized. Either that or just completely disbanded.

Signed,

Our troops are too thin anyway, spread over iraq and our local concerns in the pacific, and besides, its not our place. Thats why the UN is there, so one country doesn't feel it necessary to step in and sort things out. Its the UNs job, and they aren't doing it. I don't reckon that automatically translates to the fact that its someone else's job, I think its more "can we please give the UN a colossal kick up the bum so they stop sitting on their hands?"

As it stands, IMO, the US shouldn't be in many of the places its in, that should be the UN's job, and the US troops should be back looking after their own country's needs. Thats not bagging out the US, thats just saying that if the UN was doing their job, then the US wouldn't be stretched so thin.

I don't know if I've made that any clearer or just made it more muddled. I didn't intend it as an insult.

Actually dallas Adam's post above was sort of an underhanded critising of the US invasion of Iraq.

I think we can all agree that its not anyone countrys responsibility but rather the UN's.

Current number of troops in Iraq

Australia 450
Great Britian 8,361
Italy 2,600
United States 132,000

and as I said, the UN is a joke. Really.

I mean, come on... its just a bunch of 'committees' sitting around thinking about stuff.

See what I mean :
http://www.un.org/ga/subsidiary/

maybe if they ACTUALLY do something, they may be taken seriously. I guess thats why the US is involved. Because nothing will be done otherwise

I never mentioned the US. So either you're paranoid, or at least understand the way most of the world feels.

I'm not bashing the US. I just got back from there and loved every minute of it. I just don't like the way things are handled, and it really is obvious that it is US interests that are being served by this current action, thinly veiled by "freedom/democracy/humanitarian" reasons.

Hey, we didn't find any WMD's but we got to drop a whole heap of bombs and we caught the guy who tried to kill my daddy!

I think we can all agree that its not anyone countrys responsibility but rather the UN's.

If I recall, the US ignored the UN with regard to Iraq, and invaded anyway. So what's your point about the number of US troops involved in a purely US-sponsored war?

And if you want to nit-pick, I'll have you know Australian special forces were the first troops to set foot in Iraq collecting intelligence and painting targets before the US started bombing.

The UN is just a tiger without teeth.

Dude people! The UN and US and Iraq arent what I was asking about!

All I wanted to know is if other people were aware of it! But if you all wanna go on and bicker about iraq carry on, I get enough of that at my weekend job .

i dont know y people shun others for not keeping up to date on the news, y would one want to know? the only news to report is usually bad news which only makes one feel bad other then that one gains nothing from knowing about it. id rather live a life of ignorance and be happy then sad with a peice of mind

It's good to be informed because then you can potentially do something about it, and be a global citizen. I don't watch the news much, but I do get a lot of news just from word-of-mouth (benefit of being at a university).

I had (although I didn't recognize the name) heard about this. A few months ago I watched the documentary "Invisible Children". It's good, you should all hunt down a copy and watch it. Be warned, a strong stomach will help you.

Thanks lion I will watch it if I can get myself a copy of it.

It'll probably make me wish I'd been the one to film it though . That's all I could think about during the opening segment of The Interperter was that I wanted to be that photographer .
And I was jealous of the Red cross worker in Hotel Rwanda too !

Edit: Official link for Invisible Children for the others that may be interested.

Near the beginning there's a part that would probably not make you jealous. Unless you like being sick, that is...
