oh and the ability to be dropped, so uhm please a good housing. Looking for a prosumer type camera, my camera does not get babied, they get dragged into the field everywhere so one that is water resistent to water proof etc. I don't hesitate to grab my camera and run and average about 1000-5000 pictures a month.

I do not want a Kodac or sony, have had bad experiences with both, big thumbs down. I've used olympus and canon in the past with good results open to other brands.

Okay koi... since you are going DSLR, that would sort of make pics from my Nikon a moot point! LOL! Do you still want them or not? I buy a new camera whenever the urge hits me, so maybe I will eventually buy a DSLR as well. Who knows!

If you are considering "heading out of my original price range now" which is a vey wise thing to do in the long term. Have a look at Konica Minolta Maxxum 7D This will take all the later Minolta lenses. You can buy the "Body" only

I have checked this out as I have a Minolta 35mm several lenses plus a few extras. By doing this I will have the best of both worlds two Bodies and one set of lenses & extras.

All for fraction of the price if I have to buy more lenses for a different brand camera.

big drawback for me between the D70 and the rebel, at higher ISOs, the noise in the D70 was greater (not a good thing), and the lowest ISO was 200.

Build wise its good, but i beat the snot out of my rebel, and it still came out looking like new

I'm a canon girl, and for Digital technology even moreso, since canon has a majority of its work in the technology side of things wherwas Nikon is pretty firmly planted in the traditional professional area.

HOWEVER, the D70 is something that i would have to consider carefully, as it does have good reviews.

My vote (if it counts) goes for the D70. It has had alot better reviews and has a better body.

Sure Koi. Give me a day or two to take some moon pics with it. Living where I live, we get more overcast nights than not. LOL! I will save them to photobucket so I wont have to shrink them too much and mail you the links. OR... if you have an email account capable of handling LARGE files, I could send them that way and let the pictures be more what they really are. I have been lazy lately, so have not even gotten pics of my new angelfish, so I will have to do a few of those for you too. Sorry, this time of year I am all about flowers! LOL!

By the way... beautiful pics calla!

I saw on TV this week water proof Digital Camera (but not to any great depth) more water resistant than any thing else.

As far as shock proof I personally dont think there is one made today. Most of the top end (which you are wanting)are full of electronic gismos.

They are possibly a few that could come close to your requests. My suggestion go to one of the camera WWW and ask there as there as their is bound to be profesional photographers there. Also visit a very good camera store and speak to a profesional not just a counter hand.

At the moment my NIkon 4500 the one with the rotating bodies is getting a replacement rotating piece possible ware caused by extra humidity in the tropics.

well, this camera is quite outdated, but I LOVE IT. I've tried the more up-to-date models and they have roaming focus, which is virtually impossible to shoot good fish pictures with as the focus changes evertime something moves, be it fish or water

This is from the Powershot G2.

That last one was a 15sec exposure through the flyscreen.

All fish photos I show will be from this camera, and all are simply handheld point and shoot. This camera does have full manual control, but I am usually more interested in capturing the fish in a natural pose than getting the photography perfect.
I've had a play around with it on manual, and although slightly different to a traditional SLR, the results are similar. It has the same manual controls as the canon SLRs, that cute little dial and a bunch of buttons. Not ideal for fast changing of settings, but its becoming the way of things *sigh*

A few weeks ago I bought myself a Nikon D70. Really for optical quality, write speed etc it's a great camera. At max resolution I can shoot up to 3fps. The memory will hold on average about 9 images so continuos shooting is not a problem. You can't go past an SLR. Not sure how much in US dollars though.

if you want point and shoot with advanced capabilities, look at either of the following :

Nikon :
Coolpix 8700
Coolpix 8800

Canon :
Powershot Pro 1

For long exposures though, unfortunately, the point and shoot cameras like those and long exposures generally don't mix. They have shutter lag, moreso than the DLSRs, etc - but if you're not into huge advanced features, check out those ones.

the reason why the rebel has no optical zoom is that its an SLR, so its dependent totally on what lenses you stick in front of it, so its exempt from the 'optical zoom' function.

and it gets expensive.

I've got a 20D, a 105mm dedicated macro lens ($300), a ultra wide ($650), a cheap telephoto zoom ($200), a 50mm lens ($80).

On top of that, my next lenses that I hope to purchase sometime this year include :
400mm telephoto ($1200)
super telephoto zoom ($1500)
85mm lens ($400)
normal zoom ($700)

Yes people, owning a digital SLR like the rebel, 20D or whatever can start costing ALOT of money.

I actually looked at that camera today, could you post some pics taken with it? Actually I should be specific, would it be possible to get a moon shot and some fish tank pics? I hate asking but if it is not too much trouble....Babel had just told me she was thinking in the direction of Nikon next so this might be the way to go looking at the reviews too

Well, I bought myself a Nikon Coolpix 3100 a couple of years ago and was SO pleased with it that I turned around recently and bought a Nikon Coolpix 8800. I have had them both get bumped around with no problems. The 8800 has 8 megapixels, and an amazing macro mode. It has settings for just about anything you could imagine, including the night setting you wanted. It has a 10 times optical zoom on it, and is my constant companion. It runs right around $1000 right now. The casing on it is pretty heavy duty. It is heavy because of it though. It has vibration reduction, and video with full audio as well. I can not think of any other options I would add to it. It is just a wonderful camera. The other really good thing is you mentioned waterproof... while they do not have one for this model yet (too new yet), Nikon is coming out with casings for taking the cameras under water up to I think 50 feet and still being able to use all the features at that level. They have them already for several of the models, but not for this one yet. Overall I would give it a BIG two thumbs up! I can give you more specific information if you are interested at all, or you can go to Nikon.com and check it out for yourself. Good luck in your hunt!

Went out today to buy Canon's Rebel and was shocked that the camera did not have optical zoom!!! How in the heck are you supposed to take pics of fish without a good zoom and no macro function????! For an 800 dollar camera I was shocked and disappointed so please help me out.

I need to keep this camera under 1000-1200

It is very important to me the ability to optically zoom, macro lenses, the ability to take night photos which crisply show moon and stars, the ability to adjust and change setting for a variety of modes including the ability to turn off flash. Just a very good camera for fish and a variety of other uses.

Please help. I want to buy a camera which is going to keep me happy for at least 3 years. The write speed fo recording pics is important etc. I have looked on rating sites and whatnot but looking for your feeback on paticular models and especially from those who own a current model.

When I bought my D70 I checked out the Canon but the D70 felt much better and I preferred the layout of the camera. It even has a neat cover over the preview screen so it doesn't get covered in nose oils! I had lots of Nikon gear years ago and it still is my preferred choice. The overall build quality of the Nikon is better with both body and lens. You can also upload custom "curves" into the D70 to tweak your exposures. It works really well and there are lots to choose from. The pictures on my website (rebuilding at the moment)are all taken with the D70. Feel free to have a look.

actually I do! because it will give me an idea of what Nikon can do with a point and shoot and that tells me that there DSLR can only be better
