AV is Nortons, it completes a scan with no apparent problems. I've also scanned with one of the online scanners with no problems. I cant remember which online one it was now.
Printer is a HP 640C. It doesnt use USB, its cable is the type with pins. (know what I mean?)
All updates have been installed.

i thought they stopped supporting winME several years ago but i know that winME has win2k as its networking kernel, so maybe you're getting those updates.

Moondog, Microsoft still supports WinMe in a way,
I'm still getting critical updates from them.

No it won't...but when she reinstalls WinXP, she might install the printer correctly (if it was installed incorrectly the 1st time) this time 'round...She might need a bigger hard drive anyway...

a new hard drive isn't going to solve the printer problem though.

The Paralell port is probably working fine then...

Maybe you should try a new hard drive....just for the sake of being able to say "I have a new computer" They're really cheap...80 GB is $50 here... With a new computer you will probably be using more features and will need more space...

I thought I'd never be able to use up 80 GB of space when I got my new computer... but now my 80 GB, and additional 120 GB, are full to the brim, and I'm going to replace my 80 GB with a 250 GB....hopefully 370 GB will be enough...

Just reinstall Windows XP again onto the new hard drive if you decide to get one...

if it's an old printer, you might find that it needs resetting sometimes, by being unplugged (inclduing the cables out the back of the printer)

My parents HP880C needs it about every 2-3 weeks to keep it happy and printing what it's supposed to

Pancake, (or whoever you are when your read this ) I checked where you said and there is no exclamation points or anything else next to LTP1.
The XP install was a full install. All the bits to this computer are new except for the hard drive, the rest was old and fried!

Tiny, I just tried unplugging the cables again, will see how it goes.

Thanks for everyones help.

hmmm - HP. Have you tried unplugging the printer completely (from PC and wall) taking the power cable out of the back of the printer, leaving it for 2 minutes and reconnecting?

Paralell printer...

Could it be an improperly installed Paralell Port? Click Start, Control Panel, Administrative Tools, Computer Management. Click on Device Manager on the left of the window. On the right, a list should pop up. On that list select the little + sign next to Ports. Look for a "LTP1" or "Paralell Port" Is there a picture of a little plug on it? does it have an exclamation mark on it (in a little yellow circle)? a question mark? something else?

Did you use a Windows XP UPDATE CD? or a Windows XP INSTALL CD? Did you totally reformat the computer and remove everything? or did you just pop in the CD and have it put Windows XP on it?

Last night my printer started printing blank pages for no apparent reason. I pulled the paper out and switched it off.
When I switched the printer off I got a small black screen come up with a cursor buzzing around the screen. The screen was called c:\exploi.exe.
When I closed that down I got an option to let it continue because it was busy or to make it close now. I made it close.
All was fine until this morning when I logged on again. The printer is off so it didnt print anything but I did get that screen back again.
We finally got sick of Windows ME and upgraded to XP Home (full install) last week. I've downloaded all the updates from the microsoft website and a AV scan shows nothing.

Ideas anyone?
Any help appreciated!!

what are you using for AV software? Is it taking an exceptionally long time scanning particular files or crashing out on particular files?

edit - what printer are you using?

are you completely up to date on your windows updates? in IE go to tools-]windows update and go through the list of updates to make sure there's not one for printing. after that, you should contact the tech support for the printer manufacturer and see if they know what happened.

Despite what the people say, Windows Me is a very good operating system

yeah, it's so good that microsoft stopped supporting it BEFORE they dropped support for win98

After adding the driver you have on disk, check the manufacturers site as there may be an update avail for your model printer.
